To the outside world, you're seen as a pretty together person who's hard-working, accomplished and self-sufficient. When life get's tough, you buck up, soldier on, & "never let 'em see you bleed." You bottle up your pain and keep a tight lid on it. But, behind this exterior, you're actually hanging on by your fingertips. The stress on your shoulders is unbearably heavy & you're overwhelmed, stressed-out, and you feel like you're drowning under the pressure of it all. You're pain is silent, but your suffering is real and it's taking a toll on your health, productivity and your relationships with others.

I believe that counseling is a collaboration between client and therapist. I combine both traditional therapy techniques (CBT, DBT, etc.) with the knowledge that each member brings about themselves to help them create the best rest of their lives. Humor, feedback, support, skill building and education are all used in this collaboration. Warning: I give homework! I use lots of humor in therapy. Some of the issues I am adept at working with are: Pet Loss/Grief, People Loss/Grief, Native American Issues, Menopause, Neurodiversity and Introvert issues, Self Esteem and Confidence, Caregiver issues, Isolation and Loneliness and much more

Kelly Pickens is an ADHD Certified Family Nurse Practitioner who works with adults and older adolescents with ADHD.
The challenge is even greater for women and girls. Females with ADHD are 3X more likely to be misdiagnosed with a mood disorder. Undiagnosed/under-treated ADHD can create a tremendous amount of shame due to the difficulty of navigating society's expectations and responsibilities with an invisible disability. This is why Kelly focuses her practice on females.

Many people start therapy because something isn’t working. You might be experiencing relationship strain, overwhelming emotions, or feeling stuck in patterns you can’t quite shift. Together in therapy, we can develop healthy coping tools, understand where unhelpful patterns come from, and work to feel better aligned with who you are.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
