Substance Use Therapists in Plover, WI
Hi, I’m Katie! I work with adults navigating anxiety, trauma, and the kind of overwhelm that builds when you’ve been holding it together for a long time.
If you feel constantly on edge, stuck in cycles of overthinking or shutdown, or struggling in relationships despite your best efforts—you’re not alone. Many of the people I work with are insightful and capable but carry a level of internal stress that’s hard to explain and even harder to turn off.
Together, we make sense of these patterns and work toward feeling more grounded, less reactive, and more like yourself again.

I am a LGBTQ+ affirming therapist, and I work with people who struggle with anxiety and depression, recovery from divorce, childhood abuse, complex trauma, grief, and loss (especially loss of parents and pets), and substance use issues.

My work is trauma-informed, non-pathologizing, and strengths-based. I believe in traveling your healing journey with you. My approach is client-led, and, with gentle curiosity, we work to restore balance in your life. I seek to blend the serious and humorous sides of life. Even though we often feel broken, we are, at our core, seeking some kind of wholeness.

A person-centered approach is the foundation from which I start. From there I explore with the person; what they feel they need, what they want, and what has helped in the past. I am trained in EMDR. I’ve done art with my clients. I’ve turned on music and danced with a client. I’ve crocheted with clients. I’ve leaned into works of literature as a tool. I’ve incorporated the timeless wisdom of children’s’ books and poetry. I try to be like a mirror reflecting back people’s strengths and value and worth. It’s a beautiful thing when people start believing in their own great worth.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
