I originally trained in Developmental Psychology, and I use a lifespan perspective to understand how prior learning influenced a person to become "stuck" or thwarted in their growth and development. For me, labels mean less than the lived experience of the individual. I use humor to keep meetings joyful, and make sure sessions end on a positive note. If therapy is all pain, who would want to go back for more? I believe that everything makes sense, and we can build an understanding together. Then we can focus on how to use existing strengths and new learning to promote a life of thriving and continued growing.

I love helping families whose parents or children are struggling for any reason. As a grade school classroom teacher and later a high school special ed. teacher I often heard how hard it can be when a parent or child is stressed or unhappy. This led me to want to support families through hard times, in school and out. My work includes working with parents, parent/child relationships, and even siblings.
Other times I work with individuals and couples of all ages who are wanting to strengthen their relationships.
All in all, I love to work with anyone who would like less suffering and more joy in their relationships and life.

Whatever you are struggling with doesn’t have to be handled by yourself. Maybe isolation has been your thing for a while but you’re ready for a change. Maybe the dishes are piling up, your head is buzzing with thoughts, or you want to do the thing but you just can’t seem to do it. Perhaps grief, stress, or transitions are overwhelming you and you’re not sure what to do. It’s a unique and challenging time to be a human. That being said, representation matters, even in therapeutic spaces. As an AuDHD and queer-identified therapist, I know how helpful it can be to talk to someone who gets it.

My ideal client comes from a family who did not discuss feelings and thinks doing that might make them seem weak. Clients tell me their intimate relationships have become roommate situations. I work with folks who try not to show emotion, who are burdened by everyday living, who struggle to get or stay in shape, who can't sleep well, who feel lonely, who get angry at fellow drivers, who wonder what their life is all about, and who even say they swear too much. I will listen and help you try to make some sense of it all.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.
How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.
How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.
What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
