This can consist of CBT, DBT, trauma -informed care and substance abuse therapy.
Life is a struggle sometimes and even then, it can feel like it is a struggle all the time. This can lead to emotional and physical fatigue/pain resulting in a lack of motivation to have relationships with anyone and even ourselves. When we feel like the world is against us is when it is most important to reach out to someone and that is where a therapeutic relationship comes into play. The therapeutic relationship is one that you can trust, feel no judgment, find guidance, and learn to trust yourself again.

Specializing in trauma and attachment issues, I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families for the past 15 years assisting them with exploring past and current wounds in a deeply compassionate way.
Vulnerability is the strength that makes us humanly genuine. Through a non-judgmental and culturally sensitive lens, we will work together to uncover and build upon your resilience. I am here to empathically support your therapeutic journey and when you feel comfortable, I will gently challenge your preconceptions about yourself and the world around you. This is where growth happens. I encourage you to bring your fullest self to sessions, whatever that may entail, ie. humor, colorful language, creativity, authenticity…and I will do the same.

My name is Dr. LaToya K. Williams and I have been working as a mental health professional for the past 18 years. As a Forensic Psychologist, I have been hired by judges who want to gain an understanding of my client's clinical concerns before making a decision about a civil or criminal sanction. I work with the perpetrators of sex offenses (among other types of violent crimes). I also work with the victims of said crimes. Many people have dealt with difficult situations (such as abuse and trauma ), and many want the therapeutic help to overcome these challenges.

Seated in a trauma -informed and person-centered approach, all parts can be nurtured, valued, and integrated by gently creating a safe relationship with the body and nervous system.
Life's motion can feel intense and demanding, seeming to move at a pace beyond one's stride, resulting in chronic stress, increased anxiety and fear, and for some, chronic pain. Throughout this motion, maintaining relationships and self-care can feel challenging. Connecting with another human can be one of the safest ways to become grounded and encounter what is asking for acknowledgment and care. I believe the therapeutic relationship and environment has immense potential to provide a safe container for what is felt to be honored and explored, allowing any fear that arrives to be transformed into intentional forward movement.

I will offer instruction on how to build self-compassion to move through relational trauma and establish the boundaries of where you stop, and others begin.
Boundaries create connection, and connection is at the heart of healing. Join me in a brave space where you can build your skills to navigate the challenges of relating, and figure out how you want to be in relationships and step into your potential. I am most passionate about working with adults who want to build self-acceptance, heal traumatic stress, and establish a foundation for healthy relationships. I am sex-positive and passionate about providing affirming care to the LGBTQ+ and ethically non-monogamous communities, and hope to provide a shared understanding of what it is like to live with these identities.

My focus has been with all forms of trauma and the relationship one can have with themselves and the world around them.
Beginning therapy can often be difficult and may carry a host of fears, uncertainties, and challenges. I believe that it can also be a life changing journey that can help explore those difficult pieces and peel those layers that have kept us from being our authentic selves. My clients are often young adults, parents, those starting a new phase in their life, or anyone navigating the process of individuation and creating change. My clients are often looking to create healthy boundaries and relationships with themselves and others. Many are healing from past trauma , toxic relationships, or entering a new phase in life.

I have experience working with all forms of trauma , as well as depression, anxiety, addiction, and relationship stress.
As a therapist, I rely heavily on the power of the therapeutic relationship to assist in addressing difficult thoughts, emotions and experiences that lead to stress. I employ a very casual approach that focuses on building trust and creating a partnership where complex issues can be explored. I enjoy working with people to achieve increased life satisfaction, control over thoughts and feelings, and overall sense of understanding oneself.

Normal is a setting on a dryer. We are all unique and valid individuals with vast minds. We all have different situations and I believe in using those pieces to heal and build strength. While I specialize in trauma , addiction, and mood, our struggles are usually not that one note or simple. I focus on all aspects of who you and where you want to be, building a strong relationship based on empathy, trust and non judgement. Life is rough, we lose sight of our way, stop seeing the beauty, forget who we are, feel stuck or changed. It takes courage to be vulnerable and reality is we are imperfectly perfect.

Making impactful, long-lasting change can be difficult. Draining mental health symptoms, substance use, and trauma can contribute to making positive lasting change feel like an impossible and daunting task. I understand the importance of wanting to find that immediate relief, as well as identifying and treating the root of the problem. An essential part of our work is exploring the past and making connections between the past and present. I enjoy getting to know my clients as individuals, assisting them in their journey of learning about themselves, and helping them learn the skills they need to live a more meaningful life.

I am trauma informed and knowledgeable in both CBT and DBT, including specific evidence based interventions for OCD, anxiety, trauma as well as self-harm and suicidality.
I take a person-centered, strengths-based approach to meet clients where they are and address what they feel is impacting their lives the most. I believe building a strong relationship is the foundation of therapy, this is done by maintaining a non-judgmental stance and unconditional positive regard. The thing I love most about being a therapist is watching my clients grow and having the opportunity to be part of their journey. I pride myself on the passion I have for what I do, and how that translates into my ability to advocate for my clients.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
