I specialize in the field of behavioral sleep medicine. I work exclusively with those who have sleep problems. I offer cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia , a treatment recommended by groups such as the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. I also work with people who have chronic nightmares or difficulty adjusting to their PAP treatment for sleep apnea. Some of my patients have problems with their circadian rhythm. For example, they struggle with shift work, or they are extreme "night owls" and have difficulty getting up for work or school.

I provide services to young adults and adults looking for help with; self management for pain, headaches, sleep , eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and trauma.
It will not come as a surprise to anyone when I say, we all encounter life challenges that can leave us uncertain, preoccupied, or feeling like we are treading water. In moments like these, it can be helpful to meet one on one with a trained psychological professional.  These one on one sessions can offer us the space to be heard, discuss our experiences openly, and offer chances for us to see our challenges from more than one point of view. Often when we are able to see challenges from more than one point of view, we can learn from them in ways that can help us grow.

Therapy can be helpful to deal with many of life's challenges - feeling depressed or anxious, sleep difficulties, relationship troubles, dissatisfaction with work, and identity issues, just to name a few.
I enjoy working to celebrate the individualism and uniqueness of each client. I have a special interest in diversity and am passionate about supporting clients who may be struggling with challenges related to immigration status, sexual orientation/gender identity, racial and cultural identity, etc. My treatment approach uses characteristics of trauma informed care, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and behavioral activation.

I have found hypnosis to be very helpful in successfully treating insomnia , weight loss, smoking cessation, test anxiety, chronic and injury-related pain, relaxation and anxiety reduction (fear of flying).
I love my work: helping individuals and couples solve problems, grow and flourish. We grow by learning mastery; to me this means being competent in dealing with yourself and the outside world. I help clients do this by gaining self-knowledge and learning the skills necessary to be empowered to reach their goals and improve their most important relationships. Since starting my practice in 1983 I have been dedicated to helping clients achieve mastery. I take a very active role, and do "what works" for each client, using a variety of treatment approaches.

My approach to psychotherapy is focused on building a strong and collaborative relationship with you, the client, working with you to provide immediate symptom relief and make sustainable change. My style is warm, curious, and engaged. I provide a safe and confidential space for you to share your story. I am influenced by the psychodynamic tradition, focusing on how you relate to yourself and others. As you begin to feel understood, accepted, and more deeply known in therapy, a trusting therapeutic relationship develops. This results in greater self-understanding and leads to change, including immediate symptom relief and longer-term transformation.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
