Greetings! My name is Kathy Farrell, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. Maybe you are here because you have reached your limit – lots of questions, no answers. Maybe you are reacting to people and circumstances in ways that are unlike you. I want to keep it real and create a safe place where you can explore what is going on. Consider me a source of encouragement and honesty as you take on the challenges that have gotten in your way, I like to use newer therapies like EMDR when appropriate. I spent a few years working in sexual assault and abuse, so the clients have experienced different levels of trauma.

People often struggle with stressful thoughts, intrusive images, and emotions related to painful life experiences. Violence, sexual assault, life-threatening situations, and other significant or unexpected changes can leave you "stuck." You survive every day, but you're not living the life you want. You may be feeling shame or guilt thinking about what you "should have done", that you "should be over it by now", or "it wasn't that big of a deal, why am I like this?"

Many people have lived through terrible events that continue to haunt them, such as sexual assaults, war, child abuse, suicide, violence, near-death experiences, and more. Now the nightmares won't stop, and the memories keep popping into your head. You're on edge, jumpy, and can't relax. You might feel guilty or ashamed about what happened or how you responded. You may isolate from others, lash out, use drugs or alcohol, or consider suicide to escape it all. You're likely exhausted by all the effort to push it away and keep moving forward. If this sounds like you, you might be suffering from PTSD.

Hi! My name is Hazel Woody. I have my LCSW in the state of Wisconsin. I always take a client-centered approach, which focuses on meeting the client where they’re at. Two of the main theoretical frameworks I utilize are CBT and motivational interviewing. The majority of my clients in recent years have been children ages 9-17. I also work with adults. I commonly treat individuals diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ADHD, adjustment disorders, and PTSD. I like to create a very comfortable, laid-back environment. I let my clients lead the conversations and build rapport before jumping into treatment.

My name is Jess Reed. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor. I’m also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. I’ve always enjoyed being with people. My original career was as a librarian. I always enjoyed the people part most. When the opportunity to retrain as a counselor presented itself I jumped at it. Some of the people I admire most are counselors and social workers.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
