I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)to help shift unhelpful thoughts and build emotional regulation, trauma-informed methods to gently heal past wounds, and mindfulness to foster calm and awareness.
Hi, I'm Katie. I am a dedicated therapist in training, currently in my final year of a master's program in Clinical Mental Health at Walden University, specializing in trauma and crisis management. My passion for helping others on their mental health journeys is deeply personal and stems from my experiences as a childhood cancer survivor. I faced the emotional challenges of uncertainty, fear, and the unknown during my treatment. This transformative experience shaped my identity and fueled my desire to support and walk alongside others as they navigate their own challenges and struggles.

Are you a woman-presenting person with late-diagnosed (or suspected) ADHD? Me too! What about this: Do you feel like you’re constantly dropping the ball? Does it feel like your head is as messy as your entire kitchen full of junk drawers? You are not alone. I’ve been there, and am here to support you through demystifying that diagnosis (although I unfortunately cannot clean out your junk drawers for you).

Has your relationship been shaken by an affair? Are you feeling alone, overwhelmed, confused? Do you worry and wonder if you and your relationship can survive the overwhelming sense of betrayal? An affair rocks the foundation of a relationship. No one thinks it can happen to them or that they can survive the intense emotions of infidelity.

We all have things we like in our lives and things we'd like to change for the better. This may mean improving relationships, a desire to improve mood, and/or addressing health issues or social issues impeding on one's ability to have the life they want. We are all doing the best we can, but often we want something more out of life, and we need some help to bring this to fruition. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to identify what is going well and what might need change. It can also facilitate new effective ways of being.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
