Through the incorporation of relaxation, mindfulness, art , play, and additional functional tasks I work to maximize necessary life and social skills, sensory needs, self-regulation, fine motor skills, and visual-motor skills.
A child’s occupation is to play and socialize with same aged peers. A child’s ability to fully engage in play or socialize with others at his/her highest level of functioning can be challenging due to factors such as sensory processing, behavioral, and mental health limitations. Participation in meaningful occupations is vital to mental health and well-being. As an Occupational Therapist, I provide comprehensive services which include an evaluation of the child’s current skill set to assess age appropriate development in the areas of fine/gross motor skills, cognition and executive functioning, life skills, and sensory modulation.

My practice utilizes a mixture of techniques including talk therapy, art therapy , humor, integrative writing, creative mindfulness and sensory to assist in this process.
Normal is a setting on a dryer. We are all unique and valid individuals with vast minds. We all have different situations and I believe in using those pieces to heal and build strength. While I specialize in trauma, addiction, and mood, our struggles are usually not that one note or simple. I focus on all aspects of who you and where you want to be, building a strong relationship based on empathy, trust and non judgement. Life is rough, we lose sight of our way, stop seeing the beauty, forget who we are, feel stuck or changed. It takes courage to be vulnerable and reality is we are imperfectly perfect.

Children and adolescents often struggle verbalizing their feelings which may lead to problems in school, difficulties at home, or in developing relationships. My clients are often experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, struggling in school, or developing appropriate social skills. In providing a safe space to explore and express themselves through art making, I support clients in developing positive coping skills, building confidence, and identifying their strengths within the context of a therapeutic relationship.

I am an art therapist who helps you visualise change by creating actions steps that allow for a transition in how you think, feel and act on a daily basis.
You feel anxious. Stuck in a spiral of worry that leads to a tangled mess in your head, tightness in your chest and a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach. As a high achiever you are resilient, but lately you have felt a lot of pressure. No matter how hard you try, you feel like you are letting yourself down over and over again. When you don’t meet your own expectations you are left feeling guilty, frustrated, and beat yourself up over it. The overwhelm and stress has you feeling lost on how to end this cycle.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
