I am trained in EMDR, and I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist (CCTP II).
Coming to therapy doesn't mean something is wrong with you, or you failed because you couldn't "fix it" yourself. However, like many people I see, you might consider yourself aggressively capable. As a result, you may find it hard to trust and rely on others. When you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and are reluctant to ask for help, it is likely to lead to overwhelm. Here's what's true: your well-being MATTERS and affects the quality of your life and relationships. We'll work to identify what's in the way of living a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

Specializing in trauma and attachment issues, I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families for the past 15 years assisting them with exploring past and current wounds in a deeply compassionate way.
Vulnerability is the strength that makes us humanly genuine. Through a non-judgmental and culturally sensitive lens, we will work together to uncover and build upon your resilience. I am here to empathically support your therapeutic journey and when you feel comfortable, I will gently challenge your preconceptions about yourself and the world around you. This is where growth happens. I encourage you to bring your fullest self to sessions, whatever that may entail, ie. humor, colorful language, creativity, authenticity…and I will do the same.

Having specialized in trauma-based symptoms, I have witnessed how unprocessed trauma - especially subtle childhood trauma and attachment failures - lead to symptoms that might not initially appear related to our history.
Tired of enduring a difficult life, career or relationship? Looking for practical, out-of-the-box solutions for anxiety, depression, and the life circumstances that cause them? Tried therapy before with disappointing results? For 35 years, I have been augmenting traditional therapeutic methods with a variety of techniques, including EMDR Therapy, CRM Therapy, heart rate variability training (Heartmath), body centered approaches, mindfulness training, hypnosis, and ego-state interventions, to facilitate deep internal changes. These interventions take place within the context of a safe, non-judgmental, and supportive environment. My therapeutic style is interactive, engaging, and collaborative.

Does past or current trauma interfere with living your best life?
Trauma doesn't have to define your life. I understand that trauma isn't as much about the event, but the way the individual experienced it. My goal is to get to know my clients and help them acknowledge patterns of behavior that may have helped the cope at the time but can be shifted to help you lead a more fulfilling life.

Many are healing from past trauma, toxic relationships, or entering a new phase in life.
My focus has been with all forms of trauma and the relationship one can have with themselves and the world around them. My experience includes depression, anxiety, self-esteem, grief, co-dependency, and boundaries; particularly with adult children of parents with mental illness. I also enjoy working with all parents and those raising neurodivergent children.

Brainspotting for issues such as Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Stress, OCD and more.
My therapeutic philosophy is that it's not what is wrong with you but what happened to you. I believe that symptoms like anxiety and depression are not signs of weakness but messages to our mind and body telling us that something is not right and needs to be addressed. Maladaptive ways of coping may have once served us by dulling stress or pain but are not working any more, and so we have to learn new, healthier, more adaptive coping skills. I believe both the body and mind work together and are ultimately designed to survive, heal and thrive. Sometimes we just need understanding, validation and support to navigate the process.

I love working with a variety of adults 18+ to geriatric who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflict, grief, life changes, bipolar disorders, and victims of narcissism.
Are work, life, or family situations making you feel anxious, depressed or stressed? Or is the past refusing to stay in the past? Then look no further! I love exploring the surface and the depth with my clients, and do so in a warm, accepting, positive, and non-judgmental space. I deeply enjoy hearing people's stories, and from these stories, I can help you close chapters and create new ones. Hello, my name is Jenica (like Jessica, but with an "n" instead of "ss") and I've been therapist since Sept 1, 2011. I'm licensed in AL, WI, MD, DC, and DE, with my home base in Alabama currently.

My specialty is helping individuals struggling with: depression, anxiety, grief & loss, trauma & abuse, low self-esteem, stress management, relationship difficulties, loneliness, experiences of oppression, discrimination or marginalization, and life transitions.
Seeking therapy is a courageous first step towards better understanding how past and current experiences impact individual wellbeing. I believe the most important part of treatment is establishing a trusting client-therapist relationship. I work to build a warm, open environment so you feel safe when sharing difficult thoughts and feelings. There are times in life when our usual coping strategies are not enough and feelings of helplessness and inadequacy can take over. Therapy can help to successfully navigate life's challenges and make positive changes that will contribute to improved feelings of competence in managing relationships, transitions, and other stressors more productively.

I work with clients who may be dealing with depression, anxiety, or trauma related to women's issues, immigrant mental health, perinatal counseling, tough life transitions, and political stress.
Hi, I’m really glad you’re here. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or questioning where life—or the world—is headed, I get it. The world is shifting, with political turmoil and uncertainty making everything feel unpredictable and scary. We’re managing mental health struggles, coping with stress, and trying to have meaningful connections that feel safe. The relentless uncertainty of these times makes it hard to find solid ground. Anxiety, fear, and relationship struggles mirror the chaos around us. You’re not alone. Together, we can untangle the mess and get the clarity you need to move forward—on your terms.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
