I utilize strengths-based, trauma-informed approaches.
I created Black Sheep Wellness as a space for people who have ever felt out of place, pressured to fit into boxes that don't reflect who they truly are, or follow patterns that don't serve them. My practice is rooted in the belief that authenticity is not something to fix, but something to be honored. I work with individuals and couples navigating neurodivergence, codependent relationship patterns, and those who identify as “minimizers” who want support coming out of their shell. I also support gender-diverse clients navigating social and medical transitions. My practice is sex-positive and knowledgeable of ENM/poly relationships.

Being trained to address trauma, I understand how it can impact someone’s life and understand the importance of how the experiences in someone’s life can have a lasting impact.
I have a history of co-facilitating DBT groups. I think that the skills that DBT provides a good baseline of skills to build on. I also enjoy using CBT to change my client’s negative thought patterns. I try to use the skills that I have learned over the last several years to help my client reach their goals.

My specialty is helping individuals struggling with: depression, anxiety, grief & loss, trauma & abuse, low self-esteem, stress management, relationship difficulties, loneliness, experiences of oppression, discrimination or marginalization, and life transitions.
Seeking therapy is a courageous first step towards better understanding how past and current experiences impact individual wellbeing. I believe the most important part of treatment is establishing a trusting client-therapist relationship. I work to build a warm, open environment so you feel safe when sharing difficult thoughts and feelings. There are times in life when our usual coping strategies are not enough and feelings of helplessness and inadequacy can take over. Therapy can help to successfully navigate life's challenges and make positive changes that will contribute to improved feelings of competence in managing relationships, transitions, and other stressors more productively.

I am trained in EMDR, and I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist (CCTP II).
Coming to therapy doesn't mean something is wrong with you, or you failed because you couldn't "fix it" yourself. Like many people I see, you might consider yourself aggressively capable. As a result, you may find it hard to trust and rely on others. When you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders and are reluctant to ask for help, it is likely to lead to overwhelm. Here's what's true: your well-being MATTERS and affects the quality of your life and relationships. We'll work to identify what's in the way of living a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

Does past or current trauma interfere with living your best life?
Trauma doesn't have to define your life. I understand that trauma isn't as much about the event, but the way the individual experienced it. My goal is to get to know my clients and help them acknowledge patterns of behavior that may have helped the cope at the time but can be shifted to help you lead a more fulfilling life.

I enjoy working with a variety of adults 18+ to elder adults who are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflict, grief, life changes, bipolar disorders, and victims of narcissists.
Are work, life, or family situations making you feel anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed? Or is the past refusing to stay in the past? Then you found your therapist! We can explore everything from daily struggles to the depths of soul together, and do so in a warm, accepting, positive, and non-judgmental space. I love hearing people's stories, and from these stories, I can help you close chapters and create new ones. Hello, my name is Jenica (like Jessica, but with an "n" instead of "ss") and I've been a therapist since Sept 1, 2011. I'm licensed in AL, WI, MD, DC, and DE, with my home base in Alabama currently.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
