Children and caregivers who are experiencing emotional distress need compassionate and developmentally specific interventions that meet their individual needs. I work with caregivers to help them strengthen their caring attention and enlarge their 'toolkit' of interventions. I work with children to help them name and reduce emotional distress because "inside feelings show up on the outside". I offer developmentally- and neuroscience-informed approaches, EMDR, Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP),
Trauma
-Focused CBT, and mindfulness-based interventions to restore wellbeing.

I specialize in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting (BSP) for the treatment of
trauma
,
PTSD
, unresolved grief, social/performance anxiety, phobias, chronic pain, panic disorders, emotional reactivity, and adjustment concerns .
Clients often come to see me when they feel lost, stuck, or overwhelmed. I strive to help clients identify and explore the foundation of a challenge or issue so that they can effectively (and often quickly) achieve deep and lasting change. My work is rooted in my belief that our bodies and minds are designed to heal, and we can get stuck when those innate processes are interrupted or ignored. I use an integrative approach to help strengthen the client's inherent wisdom and ability to heal, with an emphasis on self-awareness, skill-building, and the mind-body connection.

Pornography, affairs or internet sex controlling your life? Afraid you or your loved one is a sex addict? As a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, sex therapist and psychotherapist providing counseling and sex therapy to the Madison Wisconsin area for over twenty years, people often tell me that before therapy with me they had never told anyone the extent of their pain from sexual addiction, abuse, assault or other sexual problems. Shame, hopelessness and embarrassment fed isolation and depression. Clients tell me my respect, compassion and sound clinical strategies build safety and hope as we work together as a recovery team.

I hope each of you finds respite from
trauma
that afflicts us these days.
After suspending my practice in early March, 2019, I have notified my clients that I have placed my practice on hold until pandemic conditions permit. Remote therapy can help many people but it does not conform to what I bring to my patients. It has been very meaningful to have worked with those of you I have seen over a 40 year career. Thanks for your trust in sharing your "stories" with me. I encourage, but you have displayed the courage it takes to make meaningful change. I hope to resume my practice when conditions permit. See the movie, "Good Will Hunting." It is beautiful and "therapeutic." Dr. Levine

Specialties: Couples,
PTSD
, Mood problems: I love working with couples and seeing them capture the gift of carrying each other in their hearts.
I have 40 years of experience doing psychotherapy. I have become particularly skilled at seeing what is happening with individuals, and between couples, and I share that so that you can understand what you are dealing with. We work collaboratively and creatively; I check to be sure my directions and suggestions are meaningful to you. I make sure that you are learning something significant about yourself in every session. You deserve the respect and support you need to go into uncharted territory. I care about my clients and my clients know it; that is the inspiration that keeps my work exciting to me.

I have significant experience working with clients who have a wide range of concerns including sexual
trauma
, depression, anxiety, family difficulties, peer problems, self-injurious behaviors, grief and loss, and adjustment and life transitions.
Chocolate, snowboarding, and shopping can be therapeutic, but sometimes they're not enough. I see teenagers, adults, and families when struggles get in the way of fun and suffering becomes too familiar. Friends and family hopefully are there when we need them, yet therapists can provide additional essentials: nonjudgmental, individual attention in a safe setting.
Relationships are central to our well-being, and the therapy process involves building a relationship. Clients lead, and I listen to your goals and help you to identify unhealthy patterns, reduce negative self-talk, and learn more about how you view yourself and the world.

We hold specialities in
trauma
focused cognitive behavioral therapy for youth, substance abuse counseling, child-parent psychotherapy, EMDR and BrainSpotting.
We love to collaborate with clients to help them draw from their own expertise, build on their own positive values, discover their own skills, and use these new tools to work through conflicts and hardships. We are systems therapist. What that means is: we like to approach problems that people have within the context of social, political and cultural storylines that influence the way we view ourselves and our own personal stories. We use this same approach in family therapy to seek ways to change the way the family system works rather than trying to "fix" a specific family member.

It is not uncommon for people to talk and think their way 'better'. They have made sense of their problems and wish to 'just move on'. However, they can't seem to rid themselves of the emotional turmoil and physical pain that remains. My clients say to me, 'I just want to move on but my anxiety, depression,
trauma
, bad habits, pain, guilt, shame, family members...just won't let me'.

“You are not a machine with broken parts,” writes author Yohann Hari. We are humans on this challenging journey of life. We navigate love and loneliness,
trauma
and triumph, and endless messages from our culture which say we are not successful enough, attractive enough, rich enough…good enough. I have a different idea—you are enough! In therapy, I provide safe, non-judgmental space to meet you in the full context of your life, family, culture, and dreams for the future. Let me help you find and heal your true self and build authentic relationships that make your life less stressful and more meaningful.

"When we struggle with Stress, Anxiety, and
Trauma
it can interfere with our relationships and ability to function. I work with adults, couples, and families, to work through these difficulties in a way that supports their needs. My goal is to provide a welcoming space where people feel safe, heard, that is inclusive and intersectional. A space that welcomes folks with a variety of identities, experiences, and perspectives whether that is as an individual or within the context of their relationships."

It is common to develop unhealthy patterns in thoughts and behaviors, especially after difficult experiences. Without conscious change, these patterns can increase in intensity, as a reminder of unresolved emotions and experiences. I believe we all hold unique qualities, characteristics and beliefs, that make us unlike anyone else. I work with clients to identify and cultivate their innate strengths and resources and to inspire positive changes towards a more balanced and meaningful life. I utilize psycho-education, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy to teach and implement positive coping strategies for improved wellness.

If you feel like it's time to go deeper than coping skills and "talk therapy," consider something new for
PTSD
, anxiety, or attachment.
Has back to school time been difficult? Do you feel like no one believes you when you describe your child’s outbursts and behaviors? Do you feel overwhelmed or stuck? Do you want to feel “happy” or "okay" again, or maybe for the first time? Look for therapy that helps your need for connection while maintaining your own sanity. I specialize in adoption, anxiety, chronic stress,
PTSD
school stress, attachment issues and reactive attachment, dissociation, depression, and mood disorders, and will work across multi parent households and with schools. I also work with first responders navigating FMLA, career changes, or retirement.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
