Some of the methods I use are: somatic emobodiment, focusing, re-wilding, eco/wilderness, earth and nature-based, mindfulness , Indigenous African Spirit Technologies, and ritual.
Erica is a therapist's therapist. I work with the elements of nature to reveal the sources of discomfort, disharmony, and dis-ease that are often the source of pain, suffering, and trauma within a person, family, or ancestral lineage. I believe that a holistic approach is vital to true wellbeing and that healing occurs on multiple levels- emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. In addition to clinical experience, I lived in West Africa and after returning I apprenticed with Dagara Elder, Malidoma Somé.

I specialize in sports psychology approaches with student athletes, including improving performance, mindfulness skills, loss of sport, and recovery from injury.
“What matters?” This is one of the most important questions I can ask of my clients. Without knowing what matters what they are passionate about, neither of us know why we are in the “room." To figure out the why (Why WOULD I do my homework, why would I go to practice, etc.) gives us a meaningful direction. Also let’s talk about fun. Isn’t that the whole point of NOT being an adult? If I’m not enjoying the session, I can bet my client is definitely not. I work hard to ensure a relaxed and welcoming environment that is filled filled with unconditional positive regard, hard work, humor, flexibility and appreciation, and fun.

I am not accepting new clients until May as new openings are limited. No evening hours open. I've been helping clients find their way through these feelings for the last 11 years. I can help clients learn about and use effective coping skills in order to gain a better understanding of themselves and work on becoming happy, healthy, and strong individuals. Sometimes people are just looking for someone to talk to and I am hear to listen, guide, and help you achieve your best life. I work with everyone to come up with a treatment plan that best suits their individual needs. Let's set up a plan together that we can work through.

You have made it far in life, so I know you are already strong and skilled! Sometimes it can be difficult to see that part of ourselves; we might lose sight of our abilities or be blinded by the stressors we face. Or perhaps the skills and abilities that carried us through past challenges are not supporting us through our current circumstances. My philosophy of care is holistic combining evidence-based practices with a multi-dimensional approach to well-being. I work to support and empower clients in improving their quality of life and achieving their goals.

My ideal client would be anyone in elementary, middle school, high school or post-secondary or early employment. When asked or when I introduced myself, I would label myself as a "school doctor" (rather than a medical doctor) who specializes in all things related to school including, but not limited to academic expectations or challenges; getting along with others through social connections or behavior choices, emotional adjustment or coping with stressors. Usually there is a gap between where you are and where you would like to be and it is our job to work together and move towards reducing that gap.

As an Air Force Veteran, I understand the hesitancies of seeking help of any kind but especially for mental health. After bearing witness to some of the most difficult life changing circumstances imaginable, and through my own journey of self-discovery and acceptance, I ventured towards becoming a therapist in the pursuit of helping others become the best versions of themselves. Always encouraging, I value the therapeutic relationship, authenticity, and individual responsibility, focusing on the positives in one’s life and not pathology. Life is a "crazy" ride and things can get messy...I am not afraid to join you on that ride.

If life is a road, it's not always a smooth highway. There are many paths, and knowing which path to take in your life is not always obvious or simple. Maybe you are down or unhappy and it's felt like this for a long time, but you feel stuck and unable to move on. Perhaps anxiety is a frequent companion in your life. Sometimes it may feel like nothing can change. If you have concerns about substance use, therapy can be a good place to talk about it - confidentially.

I have experience working in a variety of clinical settings treating both mental health and addiction issues simultaneously or separately. I offer court-ordered alcohol and drug assessments, DOT assessments as a certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), as well as attorney-ordered assessments. What makes my approach unique, is my ability to adapt treatment to fit your specific needs thereby making a complicated process a little more manageable. When the client can wrap their mind around the problem in a way they've never considered it is the beginning point for effective and meaningful therapy.

Every one of us is on a very personal journey through life and we all face unexpected challenges from time to time. Your road ahead may seem impossible to navigate and may even feel overwhelming. In these moments it's good to have help available and accessible. It's never easy to ask for assistance but that is the first and most important step in getting back what now seems lost and out of reach.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
