If life is a road, it's not always a smooth highway. There are many paths, and knowing which path to take in your life is not always obvious or simple. Maybe you are down or unhappy and it's felt like this for a long time, but you feel stuck and unable to move on. Perhaps anxiety is a frequent companion in your life. Sometimes it may feel like nothing can change. If you have concerns about substance use, therapy can be a good place to talk about it - confidentially.

I believe in letting you know exactly what is going on through the entire therapeutic process, so you will never be in the dark about my intentions or the direction you are going. I am especially effective at helping you deconstruct and examine your role in existing issues. We will develop practical, everyday skills to help make you a more mindful, self-aware person.

I have worked with many people over the years; young children, adolescents, young adults, adults, all with various issues. Many of the clients I see are struggling with anxiety, worries, depression, chemical use, relationship concerns, or parenting dilemmas. Often times, people are most helped by having someone to listen, to help them explore the issue, and to find solutions that work for them. My 35 years of experience have given me insight into what strategies are most effective. I am licensed and skilled in both mental health and chemical use issues.

I have experience working in a variety of clinical settings treating both mental health and addiction issues simultaneously or separately. I offer court-ordered alcohol and drug assessments, DOT assessments as a certified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), as well as attorney-ordered assessments. What makes my approach unique, is my ability to adapt treatment to fit your specific needs thereby making a complicated process a little more manageable. When the client can wrap their mind around the problem in a way they've never considered it is the beginning point for effective and meaningful therapy.

Erica is a therapist's therapist. I work with the elements of nature to reveal the sources of discomfort, disharmony, and dis-ease that are often the source of pain, suffering, and trauma within a person, family, or ancestral lineage. I believe that a holistic approach is vital to true wellbeing and that healing occurs on multiple levels- emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. In addition to clinical experience, I lived in West Africa and after returning I apprenticed with Dagara Elder, Malidoma Somé.

It is an honor to be invited into the lives of others as they seek emotional healing and growth. Each of us has our own pain and struggles, conflicts with others and even ourselves. It is helpful to have a professional guide with gifts, skills, and experience to join you as you work through that conflict, heal the emotional pain from the past, and begin living from a place of authenticity and personal power. "It is important to me that the therapy room becomes an unrestricted space in my client's life to speak, to be heard, and to explore his or her emotional, physical, and inner world." I am a VA Community Care Approved Provider!

Life is difficult; circumstances challenge each of us and, at some point, we need someone with whom to talk. If you find yourself in this position, and are willing to invest the time and do the work, I would be honored to work with you. Everyone is comprised of biological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual components. If one of those parts are missing or damaged, that person will not be whole, and will experience difficulties. Let us explore this together. While it can be true that everyone might be looking for something a little different in life, it has been my experience that most people want to feel loved, understood, and accepted. If we didn't experience these things growing up, or don't know how to extend these messages to ourselves, it makes sense that no matter what good we accomplish in life at some point we can end up feeling lost. If this sounds familiar, I'm here to help remind you of the person you were before you may have lost your way. I work with adults who have experienced trauma, and those with childhood wounds. I also provide services to children, and couples.

Early childhood is crucial in the building of the foundation of self. When a young person experiences disconnect from the self and the world around them its impact can be lifelong. For many, it can be the stepping stones to finding substance use to cope with their emotions or deal with life. Recovery is about learning to reconnect to self.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
