I treat men from the late teens through older adulthood.
The men I see often come to my practice having been "discovered" by their wives/partners engaging in sexual acting out behavior that has betrayed their relationship. An initial diagnostic interview is conducted with my female co-therapist. We both do gender specific process groups, individual and couples 'work.

I specialize in working with men to heal traumatic stress whether from a one-time event or a history of traumatic events.
Trauma leaves us feeling numb and hopeless from ourselves and others. You’re someone who deeply desires safety with yourself and others but still find yourself plagued by trauma, feeling out of control of your emotions and reactions, and feeling shame that you can’t 'get it together.' You have an idea of how you want to show up in your relationships and life but have no idea how to get there. But you’re ready to make a change. You’re ready to no longer give trauma the final say. You’re ready to feel more grounded and safe and therefore have the relationships, job, and connections you ultimately desire. I want to help you get there.

Rapport of understanding men’s mental health as a male in a female dominated field can allow for trust and understanding with both compassion and empathy at the forefront of the relationship.
David believes in not only helping the individual facing challenges, but helping that person also build their supports that are around them outside of session. David is a military veteran who knows the struggle of being trauma informed and also person-centered in care. What works for one, doesn't always work for the other. David believes in treating the person and not the diagnosis because we are not what the words say we are!

In relation to sexual addictions, I offer groups to men in order to build accountability and vulnerability.
My main focus is supporting those who have pornography/sexual additions. My goal is to work together on relapse prevention, identifying physical and emotional triggers, and implementing appropriate coping skills, while rebuilding areas of damage done by the negative behavior. Freedom from the struggle is important, but rebuilding yourself and your life is the goal. I also support those struggling with anxiety, depression, relationships, ADHD, adjustment disorders, and various other identified issues.

I bring my personal experience as a transgender man to my practice, knowing that shared identity can be an essential part of feeling welcomed in a space of vulnerability.
Life can be challenging: we’re split between personal, social and political factors around us, not to mention the inequities we experience in our capitalist society. Our lives are multi-dimensional, and our approach to taking care of our mental health should be, too. I bring a person-centered, collaborative, social justice-oriented focus to my work, using a variety of therapy modalities because therapy is not one-size-fits-all.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
