Hardship in life may be inevitable, but emotional turmoil does not have to be. At times we exhaust our coping resources, which leaves us feeling stuck or overwhelmed. With space and support, I fully believe each person can become “unstuck” to live a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Increasing self-awareness helps you get unstuck and influences personal growth and self-acceptance. By prioritizing a strong therapeutic relationship characterized by warmth, safety, and understanding, I can support you in developing effective coping skills and facilitate deeper exploration of the underlying roots that gave rise to your struggles.

Often, clients struggle to understand themselves and their friends and families do too. James's goal is to listen deeply and then earn a client's trust and show that what they are experiencing makes sense considering their experience and context. Trust, care, validation, and emotional safety are the foundation for healing James provides. Then together you can start in on the therapeutic work of problem solving and making changes. Therapeutic modalities like CBT, ACT and DBT can work when there is a strong, safe therapeutic relationship first.

Does being in love mean being in pain? Are you and your significant other having a hard time communicating or getting your needs met? Are you confused, anxious, sad or angry? Are you feeling less motivated? Having difficulty concentrating or sleeping? Do you feel distracted and find it hard to follow through? Are you questioning your goals or feel stuck? Are you questioning your family of origin and feel you have issues from the past that are unresolved? Are you grieving the loss of someone? Do you worry about yourself or your significant other and their bad habits? Are you a survivor?

Today’s technologically driven world can be quite challenging, chaotic, and may feel void of many of the personal relationships and emotional supports of the past. The growing rate of directly experienced and vicarious trauma is concerning and for anyone already experiencing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, relationship issues or family concerns, just getting through the day can seem overwhelming. My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe haven where clients can explore not just their external realities but even more importantly their internal, emotional world leading to more connections and joyful interactions.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
