I use a humorous (at least I think I'm funny), empathetic approach as I work with individuals, couples , and families.
Ugh!!! Yep, most of us get to this point before we reach out for help. I'm glad you're here and ready to make a change. Major life transitions, even the great ones, can leave us feeling unraveled, and at times can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and other mental heath conditions. I work with those who need support and encouragement as they navigate these difficult times.

Trueblood's areas of interest and treatment: Mood Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Relationship Issues, Behavioral Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Trauma.
Dr. Trueblood is a strength-based psychologist who uses cognitive behavioral and Rogerian approaches to help people see challenges as opportunities for growth. By using perspective and available internal and external resources, an individual creates a stronger self leading to healthier, happier, and more fulfilling relationships. Focus on the mind, body, and spirit are also encouraged and incorporated into treatment to facilitate a holistic approach. In working with children and adolescents, Dr. Trueblood feels giving them respect, supportive listening, additional perspective, and healthier coping skills will increase their ego-strength resulting in more positive relationships with peers, parents, and self.

I work with a variety of people with all different backgrounds and life experiences. These beliefs and values help establish ones character and value system. Throughout life, all people face challenges or barriers that can influence their mental health and alter one’s worldview. Vulnerability plays a key role in seeking out help and utilizing therapy to become more empowered and overcome life’s challenges. I believe the therapeutic relationship that can be established in therapy can assist with living a happier and more fulfilling life by meeting your individual goals.

During my 40+ years of practice, research has made many discoveries about how to assess and assist individuals, couples and families to mend and thrive.
My practice operates from the premise that people are doing the best they can under the circumstances and that everyone has strengths, coping skills, and resilience they are often unaware of. Life challenges happen to everyone. These challenges come in the form of our relationship with ourselves and others, our physical & mental health, and unexpected experiences that overwhelm our ability to cope. Sometimes the challenges are about how the past impacts the present. Being human means that living includes both joy and pain.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
