Heart racing, hands sweating, mouth dry, barely breathing, another tension headache with achy neck and shoulders - that's all before breakfast. Anxiety is felt emotionally, but also physically. It used to be "normal worry" about "important things". Now, more and more, you find yourself "white knuckling" through your day. You dread bedtime. Every night brings the misery of staring at the ceiling with a racing mind, knowing that you will be exhausted the next day (when you need to get a million things done). Your doctor wants to put you on medication. But you're the type of person who'd rather get a handle on this without meds.

Like works of art, we are all unique individuals with diverse life experiences and circumstances; I believe therapy should be specifically catered to each person and their journey. I enjoy working with people across the lifespan, but I have expertise and appreciation for working with adolescents and young adults. I am highly experienced in working with individuals who experience anxiety, depression, SI/SH, and other mood disorders, those questioning or exploring their sexuality and/or gender identity, and survivors of trauma.

Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. - Fred Rogers. Life can be hard and overwhelming at times. Life can be heavy. Sometimes, we don't even know why it's heavy. All of those feelings are valid and okay. You don't have to carry that weight alone. I am here to meet you where you are at and help you identify realistic goals to help improve or maintain your quality of life.

Do you find you and your family members shutting down, getting in loud yelling matches, or slamming doors as some topics are brought up? My clients seek help for relationship issues that make them feel disconnected, lonely, angry, and powerless to make things change. I start by creating a space for each individual to feel safe and heard. Approaching in a nonjudgmental way, we collaborate to allow their strengths to lead the way out of their darkness and find new ways to accomplish what they want most in life.

Your teen doesn’t know what they want, and neither do you. The conflicts seem constant, and they’re just never happy. They have anxiety creeping over them like so many bugs, and it seems like they’re so depressed you have the pry them out of bed with a crowbar.

Teen issues: depression, anxiety, self-harm and self-esteem have been a focus.
My ideal client is someone whom is struggling in life and motivated to seek help and make the changes necessary in their thoughts, beliefs or circumstances to get back into wellness. I enjoy working with teens. Most of my career has been with at risk youth. I also work with women's issues, addressing underlying causes of stress and overwhelm. I use Imago and Gottman approaches with couples. When working with men, we discuss the need for vulnerability and self-acceptance. Anxiety, depression, stress, grief and loss can all be successfully addressed with psychotherapy.

Trauma is defined as "a deeply distressing or disturbing experience". Traumatic events are life changing. Living with constant fear and anxiety as a result can be debilitating; making it difficult to connect with others and navigate the world around us. I specialize in treating child and adolescent trauma as well as individuals and families. Early on in my career I worked with high profile trauma cases. This, paired with my experience working in the school setting and my deep curiosity of neuroscience has given me a unique set of clinical skills.

Your moods are out of control. At times, you don't even feel like yourself and the things you've tried to help you cope up to this point either don't help enough or don't help for too long. People you love start to annoy you...and then they feel hurt in return. Whether you are a parent looking for a therapist to help your teenager or a new mother to a beautiful baby, learning how to manage our moods is no easy task. Together, I will help you understand what's going on, why you feel so anxious, down, or moody all the time and offer a collaborative and goal-oriented approach to help improve your mood and ultimately, your life.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
