I have experience working with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and cultural issues.
You did it! You made it to the first step of your journey to better mental health. I know that it can be daunting and nerve-wracking to take the step to start therapy, but know I am here to support you as you go through the ups and downs of that journey. Counseling is such a deeply personal experience and I believe that it is different for each and every person. This is why I aim to create a judgment-free environment in our sessions where you will feel comfortable and safe to be your true self because that is where the most growth takes place.

It can be scary & frustrating when you don’t feel like yourself & don’t know why you feel this. You’ve tried everything to help with your mood changes, overwhelming feelings of nervousness, guilt and not feeling good enough, but nothing seems to work. It can be scary reaching out to a therapist because you want to find someone who really connects with you. I began my training in 2011 and completed it at The Menninger Clinic. I believe in creating an alliance with my clients. My warm & compassionate demeanor allows me to empathize with my clients, put them at ease & help them open up.

In addition to private practice, I have also worked with multiple psychiatric hospitals as an inpatient therapist with a focus on depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-esteem, and PTSD.
My name is Shanna Dominguez and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. You may be experiencing worry, fear, anxiety, depression or a variety of other emotions. Good news, those emotions can be managed, I believe there are two experts in the room: You are the expert of your life and I am the clinical expert. I have had the privilege of working with adults, couples, and adolescents. I use a variety of techniques and theories to guide my work with you depending on what fits your needs. I specialize in CBT and DBT methods. As humans, we not only want to feel understood but we want to understand ourselves. Why do we do the things we do?

I am a relationship counselor who specializes in working with high-conflict couples. We believe that our behavior patterns in relationships are often shaped by experiences from childhood. For instance, a couple that is excited to get married may find themselves constantly arguing and feeling rejected. I can help track the cycle of conflict (Emotional Family Therapy by Sue Johnson) connecting/contrasting the secondary and primary emotions and noting the attachment impact of the couple.

In a world filled with expectations and judgment, it is amazing that any of us make it through the day without going completely insane. Most of us barely make it out alive and are left buried in anxiety about being good enough, our children being bad kids, our friends and family not understanding us, and exasperation as we try to keep the whole family together while navigating the world of judgment.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
