When big feelings and behaviors are rippling through your family, things feel so stressful and out of control. Tension and worry may take up residence in your household as your child navigates challenges such as school refusal, turbulent relationships with siblings or friends, anxiety, or tantrums. You have likely tried many things to help your child and are wondering what will finally work to get out of the cycle and back to enjoying your time together.

Entering psychotherapy is an important and courageous decision, which is why I offer a safe and accepting environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your experience and have an opportunity to grow, heal and develop healthier and more adaptive ways to deal with challenges. My treatment style is primarily a person-centered approach that focuses on building trust, identifying strengths, practicing mindfulness, challenging unhelpful thoughts and improving behavior patterns. I recognize that you are the expert on you so I value collaborative work between client and therapist.

People of all ages and walks of life can benefit from therapy, because therapy is really for anyone wanting to improve their life. Sometimes problems are concrete and clear, other times, people know that something isn’t quite right, but they can’t identify what is causing them unhappiness or stress. Therapy works because there are times in everyone’s life when they can use help to overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. Problems come in many shapes and sizes, both large and small, and therapy is a good space in which such problems can be addressed.

What makes building and maintaining a personal relationship so difficult? It can be many things. Past and present experiences, patterns that you can't seem to break out of, childhood traumas, family influences, abuse (sexual, emotional or physical), post-traumatic stress issues, or your own expectations and anxieties. All of these factors can affect your relationships with family, friends and romantic partners.

A child’s behavior is telling a story of what is going on inside. Many times, when our kids are reaching out for connection, they will behave in ways that create the opposite response. When a child is struggling to find positive ways to relate, our team of therapists come alongside them and their family to help them feel more understood, empowered, connected and loved. I believe in conducting therapy in partnership with families, pediatricians, teachers, and other specialists to ensure that each child receives a personalized treatment plan that is reinforced in all settings.

Among these somatic therapies are Internal Family Systems (IFS), Brainspotting, and Applied Polyvagal Theory.
Feeling anxious or depressed is often the result of chronic stress, unresolved trauma or grief. I work with adults who struggle with intense emotions or have coped through numbing them. Some suffer from physical discomfort or chronic pain, while others struggle in their relationships, or engage in behaviors that both soothe and hurt them. If that resonates with you, I would love to offer you my attention and guiding skills to help you explore and make sense of your inner experiences in order to heal wounds and access more calm, clarity, confidence, compassion, and connection with yourself and others, so that you may feel more alive!

Transcultural psychiatry identifies the role of social and cultural factors in your challenges, specifically useful if you or your family have migration history.
Loss, failure, and separation are major root causes of many forms of suffering in life. But they are not always evident, we may be too young when live through them, or we may not feel their impact until long after an event. Sometimes they even travel through generations. As a psychotherapist, I have spent over 25 years helping people who suffered from a variety of emotional and relational problems created by one or a combination of these issues, ranging from basic unhappiness to unhealthy relationships, workplace conflicts, divorce and separations, parents struggling with their children, migration and forced separation, even trauma.

Getting started is a difficult decision to make. Feeling vulnerable can be unbearable. Not many of us want to be vulnerable with ourselves, let alone, with someone else. So, we have 2 choices: 1. keep things as they are or 2. work towards making a change. In my eyes, we are all elegant giraffes. Life comes with ups and downs, and often, this causes us to forget that we are capable of enduring it. Sometimes, what we need is hope. Let’s rise above, and keep our heads held high through all the pain, the suffering, the sadness and all the joy and love that life brings us.

No matter your age, it is one of life’s challenges to put difficult feelings and experiences into words. You may not yet know what is causing your suffering or symptoms, making the choice to ‘talk to someone’ amidst a busy schedule even more daunting. While words cannot capture it all, they are nonetheless a precious tool. Taking the time to speak to a non-judgmental and attentive listener can help work through what previously felt unsayable, bringing a much-needed sense of peace. "It does not matter how the facts occur in life, it matters how they are told," wrote the Italian novelist, Elsa Morante.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
