Are you finding that consuming thought and behavior patterns are posing significant challenges in your everyday life? Has anxiety, OCD, or the lingering echoes of trauma taken what feels like an insurmountable toll on your mind, body, and relationships? Do you feel caught in a spiral of shame that never seems to cease? Are you at a point where you are ready to say, "Enough is enough!"? Life amidst all that mental noise can leave you feeling stuck and ill equipped to navigate ways to better maneuver in this uncertain and imperfect world. Are you struggling to escape a painful or abusive past? Do relationship strains affect you dearly? "Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." - Peter Levine. Identifying as a person of color and an immigrant who has experienced my own share of mental health and trauma struggles, I value the importance of a non-judgmental, safe space in order to identify that you are more than your past traumatic experiences. I have a deeper commitment towards the person as a whole, rather than just addressing the symptoms. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and graduated from my MSW program by January 2020.

Feeling stuck? Frustrated? Like a burden? Struggling to stay focused? You don't have to do this alone! I see individuals 18+ in their search for balance with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, adjustment disorders (starting college, to getting out of prison, to retirement), anger, and much more. A large focus of my experience has been around those in jobs/situations with stigma that is high around mental health, and high stress (military/ veterans, first responders, flight crews, frontline medical personnel). Let's break the stigma that asking for help is weakness!

You strive to be the best, the best person, the best parent, the best , but you always feel like you fall short. Is it possible to adjust? Chaotic. Exhausting. Despite your best efforts, there never seems to be enough time in the day. After caring for so many others in your life, you struggle to care for yourself. You're constantly running on empty. Although you are aware something needs to change, and stirggeling to figure out what to do.

Welcome! I'm Samantha. My heart for mental health comes from my desire to help people struggling with daily life in ways they don’t see other people struggling. Everyone has their own roadblocks and it can feel very defeating to see everyone around you holding things together so well when it feels like you are not. My passion is in working with adolescents and young adults who are looking for a sounding board on how to navigate the seemingly daily new challenges.

One of my beliefs is that people cannot truly love, or allow themselves to be loved in return, if we do not first find a way to love ourselves. Fundamentally, we can become wounded because of relationships, which in-turn, adversely affect how we interpret our own meaning and attachment to the world and others. However, as we grow in awareness and care for self, we can begin to heal in relationships just the same. This is accomplished by working through those past wounds which tend to manifest in and become the present behaviors and intentions that harm us and others.

Have you ever looked at your reflection and wondered who you are? Do you ever feel lost or wonder where you are headed? Confession- I have. I realized later in life that my calling was to become a therapist. Long before returning to college, I received on-the-job training through my own experiences as a mother, wife, friend, and as an individual struggling with depression and anxiety. These experiences helped prepare me for my role as a therapist. Just like my clients, I looked for a therapist to talk to, one who would listen and be able to understand where I was coming from.

Schema Therapy

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
