From birth, we start forming a sense of self and expectations about our environment. Ideally, we have our basic needs for safety and nurture provided. But when not, we employ innate responses to these threats and deprivations, and patterns form in our behavior that serve to protect us from these perceived threats or deprivations. These are normal adaptive behaviors, but can become barriers over time that block the development of a fully functional and gratifying life. It has been my life's work and passion to assist others in their sacred journey to discover, understand, and replace these barriers with more functional skills.
The capacity of a therapist to offer an empathic relationship is essential, and discovering a link to each person is part of the initial state of therapy. Basic to my approach to psychotherapy is a broad grasp of and respect for what has worked through many years of experience, coupled with continuous exploration of new avenues of intervention.
One can tell from my profile that I have been in my profession much longer than most. Living and working in our beautiful, historic city since 1971 has introduced me to many individuals and families from multiple generations. Anxiety comes in many different forms, but it's most common feature is that the suffering is mostly endured in silence. Discovering that you are not alone and that people who function well and achieve success in many walks of like are fellow sufferers is both a surprise and revealing. It is my experience that group therapy is the most effective environment in which to address these issues.
