Debra's other areas of expertise include codependency, child and adolescent counseling and parenting issues.
Are you looking for redemption? For a way through the pain to a place of emotional growth and spiritual freedom? Perhaps today is the day to seek help and begin the journey back to who you were meant to be....Based on Romans 12:2, my counseling approach is to assist clients with the transformation of inaccurate thoughts, beliefs and self-perceptions. I use a strengths-based model grounded in encouragement and practical feedback. I work together with my clients to identify and activate their talents and unrealized spiritual potential to bring about positive change and emotional healing.

I have written and published a parenting book "Parenting & the Challenging Adolescent " and a program titled " Teen Gender & Sexual Identity Issues and the Impact on the Family".
My focus is on the struggling families, providing support and encouragement in reframing the family dynamic, bringing into play the family history and what brought the client to where they are at today; focusing on moving beyond the moment, improving the future. I work primarily with the Department of Developmental Disabilities and custody dispute cases providing Parent Education, Counseling, Anger Management, and Behavioral Support Services for youth.

It HAS been a wild ride, and it looks like this might continue for a while. If you are looking for support to deal with the anxiety, depression, transition and trauma that is knocking at your door these days, or if your child or adolescent is needing support with stress and emotional challenges, you are certainly not alone. I work with clients who are wanting to know themselves better, to build self-trust, and who are eager to commit to taking steps to get themselves unstuck. Let's face it: we had problems before this pandemic, but now they may seem...louder. Some of us have even taken stock of life and want a complete change.

“Every story is about a character who wants something and overcomes conflict to get it.” (Donald Miller) If you're at the "conflict" part of your story, experiencing stress, distraction, addiction, depression, parenting issues, loneliness, trauma, negative beliefs, & other challenges, I can help. Rather than providing a superficial fix. I'll guide you to make sense of your problems at their roots, working to heal the pain below the symptoms. Through our work, you may grow to understand and overcome your conflicts, and enjoy a more satisfying, productive, & meaningful life.

I believe that counseling is sacred work, and that many of the issues we face stem from unmet relational needs. While relationships can be a source of pain, they are also a powerful force for resiliency. Through the therapeutic relationship, I enjoy coming alongside clients on their journey by providing a safe and compassionate space for exploration. Together we will go beyond just symptom management and work toward understanding the root of what you are experiencing. Whatever you are facing, you were never meant to do so in isolation.

I have been providing therapy services since 2005 to individuals with a variety of mental health challenges such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. The majority of my experience comes from working in community mental health. I specialize in treating individuals with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder by using a highly effective treatment modality called EMDR, which can take fewer sessions to effect change than traditional therapy. I also have many years experience assisting individuals who are coming to terms with their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Suffering from mental and emotional problems can cause you to feel hopeless and defeated. You may believe recovery is not possible and that you're destined to live a life of misery. I am here to tell you that you can heal and be happy instead of sad and anxious. I help individuals who suffer from trauma, anxiety disorders and OCD. I also work well with individuals who struggle to regulate their emotions or participate in self-destructive behaviors. In therapy we work together on understanding how your thoughts, belief systems, and feelings play a role in your life.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
