Times of uncertainty often draw our attention to our fears and anxieties, but they also illuminate the things that are most important to us. Whether you’re wanting to learn more about yourself; worrying about your child’s well-being; suffering the loss of a loved one; processing abuse or trauma ; experiencing a major life transition; feeling unsatisfied in your relationships; or are just wanting more out of life, therapy may be a great place to start.

When life feels presents us with stress, whether it be from anxiety, depression, or trauma , it is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed and a sense that our lives have become unmanageable. My greatest satisfaction comes with assisting individuals in recognizing their power to grow and thrive. I assist my clients, who include adolescents and adults, in finding ways to change their relationship to thoughts and emotions and develop a stronger sense of self, establishing core values, and creating an action plan linked to goals based on those values.

I see adults, couples, and families, and, though I treat a wide variety of problems, I specialize in couple therapy and in treating trauma and substance use disorders.
If you’re looking for a therapy of depth, insight, and durability; if you’re seeking a highly-trained therapist with 35 years of experience who listens carefully and thoughtfully; if you’ve been disappointed by ‘quick fix’ approaches that promise much and deliver little; if you want an individualized approach designed specifically with your needs in mind, then please call me to discuss whether we might be a good fit.

Trauma , loss, identity + aging impact people in different ways. Do you often feel detached or numb? Do you avoid thinking about the past or self-medicate? Are you concerned about your child? Do you often find yourself in difficult relationships? Are you concerned about your memory? Do you feel sad or anxious a lot? Are you "stuck" in the same pattern? Do you have trouble trusting people? Are you irritable most of the time? Do you feel like you do not know yourself or your purpose? Do you feel incomplete or want meaning in life? If you answered yes to any, I believe that I could be a good fit for you.

I mostly work with clients with depression, anxiety, PTSD , and/or who have issues related to life transitions, loss of loved ones, relationship challenges, codependency, low self-esteem, life/work balance, career uncertainty, parenting, sexual orientation, discrimination, and trauma including abuse, rape and near death experiences.
My approach to counseling is personalized and collaborative, and is based in Relational-Cultural Theory which takes into account the effects of abuse, discrimination and marginalization on mental health. I believe that all humans have the tendency to grow, heal, and develop their full potential. I work to gain an accurate, accepting, understanding of each client’s reality so that the therapeutic relationship provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment to explore his or her thoughts and feelings about difficult life issues, with the goal of resolving issues, gaining self-acceptance and building relationships.

Parents and children have incredibly tough jobs. Parents are supposed to love, support, teach, protect...while children are supposed to explore, learn, push boundaries, and scare the living daylights out of the adults in their lives. Sounds easy right? What happens when our job as parents is made even more difficult by life circumstances? Now the hardest thing we'll ever do raising our children is made even more challenging with a child struggling with anxiety, depression, and/or trauma . What do you do then?

I have been in the field of counseling since 2016 with an emphasis on trauma , adolescents, and substance abuse.
I have heard from so many people that they have tried therapy before, or they are afraid to, because they don't want to talk to someone who is "stuffy" or "technical". I love working with people who aren't afraid to let loose and just be themselves in session. I love working with people across all ages with a sweet spot for young adults as well as those with alternative lifestyles and or spiritual beliefs.

As an experienced trauma and insomnia therapist, I believe that you can have peace after trauma , sleep after insomnia, and full, meaningful life while managing chronic pain and illness.
Are you exhausted, tired, stressed-out, and always on edge? Do you find racing thoughts are keeping you awake at night, tossing and turning instead of sleeping? You may be fed up with constant anxiety and lack of sleep that leaves you feeling tired and irritable and is causing you problems at work or home. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But, one this is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to start sleeping soundly again. You’re ready to start feeling good again. Most of all, you’re ready to start feeling energized about your life again.

My preferred modality is EMDR, which is highly effective in the treatment of all types of trauma that impact our current functioning.
It is my belief that in spite of all life’s pains and challenges that it is entirely possible to find contentedness and even joy in our experience. I aim to learn about my client’s past, their values, life desires, and the current struggles that get in the way of daily life. It is through this exchange that we build a therapeutic relationship and set the stage for our work together.

My areas of personal interest include healing from trauma , exercise, longevity, yoga, and mindfulness.
Counseling works best when there is an understanding of your concern and a plan of action for making positive change. I see counseling as a collaborative process; I will work with you to find ways of dealing with challenges that result in improvement for you, your partner, and for your family. My ideal client is curious about how they could live a more fulfilling life. I also enjoy working with reluctant or skeptical clients who may have had a bad experience in counseling before.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
