The best way to get to the heart is through art. My name is Sarah Engelskirchen-Bugler, and I created Heart 2 Art Therapy, PLLC in order to offer an accessible and expansive pathway towards processing, healing, and empowerment through the expressive arts. While I specialize in utilizing visual art, writing, music, movement, and other transformative somatic approaches, my toolbox also consists of a variety of other person-centered, trauma-focused, and strengths-based modalities. I am trained in EMDR and often draw on somatic therapies, attachment theory, and parts work.
Experiencing trauma, loss, or upheaval is destabilizing and isolating. It can erode the relationships we value the most while making us call into question our sense of identity. Even if we avoid consciously thinking about it, the imprint of our past can wreak havoc on our physical health, our nervous system, and our present experience. The healing process asks us tune into our intuition and our bodies so that we can notice which parts of ourselves most need our attention and care. I can offer tools and support for those seeking to regain a sense of safety and connection with themselves, others, and the world around them.

I use Emotionally focused, IFS, CBT, Somatic & Mindfulness to support women processing grief, anxiety and unprocessed emotions that may be showing up in your daily habits and routines.
I can support you in finding a new path that reflects the belief system of your higher intuitive self. Often, an area of life that isn't working well is due to unconscious thinking, habits, and unhelpful personas such as people pleaser or perfectionist that interfere with your ability to reach a goal. Getting in touch with triggers is an amazing way to assimilate emotions and thoughts that are rooted in fear. I would love to help you use pattern interrupt, explore energetic feedback and compassionate inquiry to align your thoughts, words and habits, so that peace and love is present in all parts of your life.

Using a warm and open approach, together we will work to discover the resources you hold within you to promote healing and growth. I have experience working with survivors of both childhood and adult trauma.

I come to your session equipped to offer you a range of modalities including EMDR, Narrative therapy, Interpersonal therapy and drawing on training in ACT, DBT, TF-CBT, IFS, MI, KAP, Harm Reduction Psychotherapy, Psychodrama and Somatic Abolition.
My focus as a therapist is on helping survivors of traumatic experiences to heal and address the many ways that early abuse and neglect can impact adult life. You may have noticed posttraumatic symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, always feeling on guard, not being able to remember things you feel you should, or overly negative beliefs about yourself and the world. You may have been dealing with the symptoms for so long that they seem like a part of you- unhelpful patterns, depression, anxiety, addiction, career, relationship or parenting problems and difficulty making desired life changes. Things can be different!

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
