As an experienced trauma and insomnia therapist, I believe that you can have peace after trauma, sleep after insomnia , and full, meaningful life while managing chronic pain and illness.
Are you exhausted, tired, stressed-out, and always on edge? Do you find racing thoughts are keeping you awake at night, tossing and turning instead of sleeping? You may be fed up with constant anxiety and lack of sleep that leaves you feeling tired and irritable and is causing you problems at work or home. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But, one this is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to start sleeping soundly again. You’re ready to start feeling good again. Most of all, you’re ready to start feeling energized about your life again.

Feeling exhausted from the chatter in your mind? Reworking that thing you said last night, "what if..." Worrying about what will happen tomorrow or next year? Sleep can restless or evasive when anxiety is high. Would your friends and family be shocked by the comments, self -recrimination, and judgments floating around in your head? It can be exhausting keeping up the pretense of having it all-together. You probably mostly do have it together: great job, friends, a loving partner. But you wonder why it's not more more enjoyable? Or maybe two or three areas of your life and fantastic but that missing piece is leaves you longing.

For the past 25 years, I have worked with individuals with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep difficulties, troubled relationships, marital distress, chronic illness, and life transitions. My practice currently focuses on working with clients who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders. I also see patients with cancer across the cancer continuum, from diagnosis, treatment, to survivorship or recurrence and end of life. I am passionate about working with both of these patient groups.

My approach to counseling is personalized and collaborative, and is based in Relational-Cultural Theory which takes into account the effects of abuse, discrimination and marginalization on mental health. I believe that all humans have the tendency to grow, heal, and develop their full potential. I work to gain an accurate, accepting, understanding of each client’s reality so that the therapeutic relationship provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment to explore his or her thoughts and feelings about difficult life issues, with the goal of resolving issues, gaining self-acceptance and building relationships.

I have over thirty years of clinical experience helping clients find lasting change in their lives. My clinical focus is treating depression, anxiety, and trauma. I have specialized training in treating complex trauma including dissociative disorders. When working with trauma, the healing process can often be frightening and painful to address. Talk alone is not enough and can be retraumatizing in some cases. I use EMDR. My goal is to provide a professional, yet personal atmosphere where you can experience comfort and safety in exploring what is troubling you and find effective tools and skills that you can use in your life.

I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients, and have done so since I began practicing in 1994. Life can give us painful challenges. Sometimes we may need to ask for help. We can feel stuck and confused in our thoughts and feelings, and know we're not living the life we really want. We may have problems with relationships, divorce, loss, health, aging, loneliness, social or work issues. I aim to form a warm, interactive connection that is safe and supportive with a focus more on the present than the past. I support you in having more awareness and understanding to solve problems, learn to cope, and to discover the person you want to be. The primary goal is for lasting change that enriches and gives meaning to your life.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
