Engaging in counseling can be a scary first step. You may wonder if your symptoms are just in your head and if you really just need to "tough it out". I applaud the courage it takes to look for a counselor and entrust someone with the scariest or most difficult parts of your life. I am honored to be that person for my clients.

People and their life experiences are unique, as is their journey within mental health. Many people experience life stressors, including existential crises. In such cases, I serve as a guide providing support and helping clients explore their strengths. I believe there is power in exploring what our purpose and meaning in life is. I work well with those who are struggling with anxiety and depression. I also work with both individuals and couples experiencing relationship struggles. My approach to therapy is warm, friendly, and grounded in empirically based interventions. I look forward to helping you!

My specialties are depression, insomnia, OCD and parenting.
Traditional talk therapy isn't your only option. For some people, a more behavioral approach with homework and accountability can be helpful. My clients and I explore evidence-based treatments for all three areas of mental health: behaviors, thoughts and emotions. Then, together, we create an individualized treatment plan that we revise as we go. Most often, we explore present-day experiences with a bit less focus on the past.

I specialize in the treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders as I have lived experience and I know how challenging and misunderstood it can be.
Facing emotional challenges can make you feel alone and lost. When people can’t physically see the wounds you carry you can wonder if you’re the only one, that you’re “just this way” and there’s nothing to be done, you’re broken. You have every right to feel what you’re feeling, your emotions, actions, thoughts, all of it makes perfect sense given what you’ve gone through AND change can happen. I want you to feel accepted while we push for change together. I don’t believe anyone is broken even when we feel that way sometimes, I believe we face challenges and challenges can be overcome.

Everyone faces challenges in life that are difficult to overcome without help. Counseling provides the opportunity for growth and self-discovery in the context of a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment. I use a variety of counseling techniques that are determined by your needs. Together, we will assess your strengths, acknowledge challenges and discover strategies that will work for you. In so doing, we will formulate a treatment plan and continually evaluate our work as we progress. Treatment is provided within a community-based model, taking into account your culture, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and personal values.

I believe you hold the answers to the challenges that bring you to counseling. It is my job to support you finding them. I aim to work with acceptance, respect, and trust - allowing our work to be guided by you. In session, I listen both for what is said, as well as process – the often unspoken patterns and strategies of relating. I see mental health and well-being as a sense of wholeness. In this state, the many parts of ourselves are in agreement. I firmly believe that even the most disturbing or distressing experiences are potentials for growth and learning.

Most people don’t realize physical and mental health are intricately interwoven. Memory is encoded with the emotional and neurological information you experience at the time of the incident. These emotions and sensations are then released into the body when the memory is triggered. The survival functions of fight, flight or freeze shut down the immune system, thus undermining overall health. Using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the brain reprocesses these memories, releasing and metabolizing the distress, and placing the memory squarely into your past.

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
