I have worked with a wide range of symptoms, however most of my experience lies in working with individuals who are managing anxiety, depression , and trauma related symptoms.
Hello! My name is Taren Williams and I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in WA State. I thoroughly enjoy working with people and feel honored when a person trusts in me their life story/current difficulties. I believe there are many different reasons to seek therapy, and that each of us have walked such unique and sometimes challenging paths to get to where we are today. I enjoy getting to know the intricacies of these paths and what has led an individual to where they are today, and from there beginning the work, collaboratively, towards where one would ideally like to be.

March 2023: at capacity, waitlist is full. I'm sorry. My ideal client is someone whose body and mind are reacting from stress, depression , anxiety, or trauma due to coditions/situations that may/may not be changeable (e.g. various minority status, chronic medical condition, aging, caregiving, loss) and who feels not aligned with true self. You are looking for a safe space to explore and express your authentic self without judgement/prejudice/discrimination. You want to learn about your pain, sufferings and ways to cope, evaluate who you want to be, and act based on what is “right” for you. My pronoun is she/her.

Most of my experience has consisted of working with individuals that experience challenges with depression , anxiety, trauma, life transitions, parenting difficulties, boundaries, divorce, LGBTQ+ challenges, relationship issues and more.
I treat adults (18+) that need support, guidance and insight into their mental health challenges while actively engaging in the work. I work collaboratively with my clients and take a person-centered approach as I believe the therapeutic relationship is a critical component to success in the therapeutic work. Dual engagement in the the therapeutic process leads to clients learning to apply techniques independently and better manage mental health symptoms.

I have experience with many areas including trauma work, symptoms of anxiety and depression , relational conflict and more.
Are you struggling with daily tasks? Do you want more out of your relationships? Does it feel as though your heart is heavy? Struggles like this can require a helping hand and therapy can be the step you need. Therapy has the potential to empower and guide growth to overcome the challenges that life brings. It has the ability to bridge tough conversations, acknowledge the impact that the greater society has on us and unpack the emotions that feel unexplainable. Soon that checklist can feel smaller, relationships feel more fulfilling and that weight a bit lighter.

Are you struggling with depression , anxiety, navigating major life changes, or just feeling lost? Are you struggling to figure out what to do after college, or reentering the workforce after a long absence? Together, my clients and I work to place their difficulties in cultural context, while still keeping in mind that we are powerful. Starting with the assumption that everyone is capable of functioning well, I work from an internal family systems, existential, and multicultural standpoint to support clients in developing a deep understanding of maladaptive patterns.

I strive to create an environment that encourages growth and healing. Issues such as anxiety, depression , grief/ loss, abuse, trauma, domestic violence, anger, relationship and identity crisis leave one feeling depressed and alone. Working closely with individuals, couples, and families, together we will face life's struggles. My experience as a family therapist has provided me with extensive opportunity to work with families and children in the foster care system, or those families at risk of children being removed from the home. Additionally, working as a mental health professional in hospital emergency rooms has provided hands on crisis intervention with individuals facing extreme emotional situations.

My practice areas include: individual, couple and relationship counseling, depression , anxiety, early life abuse and neglect, trauma/PTSD, self-esteem, family issues and spiritual exploration.
Sometimes in life, we can feel lost, stuck or even desperate. We do the same things over and over again without finding any solutions to our problems. Life often becomes painful when our past experiences have no words to describe them or clarity to bring them to understanding. Using a variety of approaches my clients and I explore their current pain and concerns, while considering the picture of their past experience. With support and compassion we map out a plan to discover ways to become unstuck and move in new directions.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
