Have you noticed changes within your child's behavior that leave you feeling confused as to what to do or say? Perhaps your child has been struggling with overwhelming anxiety or emotional outbursts. Or perhaps you've noticed your teenager begin to isolate, drop in their grades, and become overly self-critical. Children and teenagers are often communicating their needs through their behaviors, and it is often very difficult as a parent to know what to do. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling within difficult emotional experiences, transitions like divorce, or within relationships.

After working in palliative care/ hospice, I have now focused on adolescent treatment, including helping to avoid self-injurious behaviors, suicidal gestures and substance abuse.
At this time I am accepting all clients who are 16 years and older. I feel so fortunate to have found a career that I love, and cherish! My practice came about in the form of an epiphany one day, as I sat on the AIDS unit in NYC as a volunteer. As I listened to a man share his story, I realized that he had not been celebrated for his many talents, but had been ostracized for having AIDS. I decided that my philosophy was going to be-"our differences are what make us beautiful, we should all be celebrated for our uniqueness." This is the philosophy I live by daily.

Being also a Certified Mediator, one of my specialties is working with relationships of all make-up and ages: Pre-marital, Marriage and Divorce issues, Parenting and Co-parenting concerns, Parent- Teen issues, Life Coaching, and helping individuals or entire families navigate the emotional challenges of "Change" in their lives.
Does your life or relationship need a major overhaul or maybe just a "tune up"? I can help you with either. Having successfully worked with a broad range of client issues from families in transition or conflict, to individuals with severe trauma and depression, I have been exposed to enough that nothing you tell me will shock me. I will not judge you. Often it is our unconscious patterns and life stories that influence the way we feel, think and behave. I can help you understand "why" so that you can change and feel better.... or perhaps gain the tools needed to ask someone else to change.

First, I believe it is my duty to be able to actively listen to my client, obtain a good understanding of where they are and where they want to go. Together, we will move you and/or your team or organization in the desired direction to reach your goals. As a young man growing up in North Chicago, I quickly learned that life is full of rewards and upsets, if I allowed it to happen. At 3 months old, I was abandoned by my mother, left inside of a garbage can in an alley waiting to die. However, life had other plans for me. A passerby heard my faint cries and pulled me from the garbage can. Later, I was adopted but went on to experience years of physical and emotional abuse by my adopted mother. At the age of 12, I ran away from home and was placed in foster care. I was adopted again, but I experienced more mental and physical abuse. I dropped out of the 9th grade and began running away again. At the age of 16, the authorities declared me an emancipated teenager . With a story like mine, you would probably think there was no hope for finding happiness or for finding quality of life. However, I have learned to use my negative experiences as a testimony to reach out and help others.

As a former teacher, I have extensive experience working with adolescent & teacher populations.
I believe that everyone can develop the skills necessary to live the life they’ve always wanted, and it begins with their mental health. My goal as a therapist is to help clients explore their past, their patterns of thinking, and their behaviors in order to adapt and overcome. Using an individualized and integrative approach, clients will develop the skills needed to reach their goals and become drivers of change. I work with clients to address issues related to trauma, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and stress. I am also trained in EMDR as a trauma treatment modality.

Your teen is unable to sleep anymore or is stating "I'm tired" all of the time. The grades are slipping in certain classes, and they say "I don't know" when you ask them what's going on with their grades. You have noticed that they aren't hanging out with their friends anymore or the opposite, the friends they used to hang out with aren't there anymore. It's not resolved when you both try to talk to each other, and the communication is coming up with short answers or nothing at all. You want to help your teen any way possible, not only with what has happened in the world with the pandemic but also being a teen now in this day in age

Teen Therapists
Adolescence can be a time of both disorientation and discovery. The transitional period can raise questions of independence and identity; as adolescents cultivate their sense of self, they may face difficult choices about academics, friendship, sexuality, gender identity, drugs, and alcohol.

Most teens have a relatively egocentric perspective on life; a state of mind that usually abates with age. They often focus on themselves and believe that everyone else—from a best friend to a distant crush—is focused on them too. They may grapple with insecurities and feelings of being judged. Relationships with family members often take a backseat to peer groups, romantic interests, and appearance, which teens perceive as increasingly important during this time.

The transition can naturally lead to anxiety about physical development, evolving relationships with others, and one's place in the larger world. Mild anxiety and other challenges are typical, but serious mental health conditions also emerge during adolescence. Finding a teen therapist in Tacoma and addressing a disorder early on can help ensure the best possible outcome.
