After working in palliative care/ hospice, I have now focused on adolescent treatment, including helping to avoid self-injurious behaviors, suicidal gestures and substance abuse.
Preferred contact method is email, please check your junk for my reply! I feel so fortunate to have found a career that I love, and cherish! My practice came about in the form of an epiphany one day, as I sat on the AIDS unit in NYC as a volunteer. As I listened to a man share his story, I realized that he had not been celebrated for his many talents, but had been ostracized for having AIDS. I decided that my philosophy was going to be-"our differences are what make us beautiful, we should all be celebrated for our uniqueness." This is the philosophy I live by daily.

I absolutely love working with children of all ages and their caregivers. I have successfully helped children and adolescents overcome depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD and sensory integration disorders. As well as strengthen coping skills, learn ways to better regulate their emotions, and form healthier relationships. I have also helped parents learn new ways to support their child/ adolescent that are specific to the needs of their kid. I am very familiar with 504/IEP's. I have experience advocating and helping create plans that increase school success. Lastly, I have worked closely with families in foster/adoptive care systems.

Have you noticed changes within your child's behavior that leave you feeling confused as to what to do or say? Perhaps your child has been struggling with overwhelming anxiety or emotional outbursts. Or perhaps you've noticed your teenager begin to isolate, drop in their grades, and become overly self-critical. Children and teenagers are often communicating their needs through their behaviors, and it is often very difficult as a parent to know what to do. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and adults who are struggling within difficult emotional experiences, transitions like divorce, or within relationships.

Being also a Certified Mediator, one of my specialties is working with relationships of all make-up and ages: Pre-marital, Marriage and Divorce issues, Parenting and Co-parenting concerns, Parent- Teen issues, Life Coaching, and helping individuals or entire families navigate the emotional challenges of "Change" in their lives.
Does your life or relationship need a major overhaul or maybe just a "tune up"? I can help you with either. Having successfully worked with a broad range of client issues from families in transition or conflict, to individuals with severe trauma and depression, I have been exposed to enough that nothing you tell me will shock me. I will not judge you. Often it is our unconscious patterns and life stories that influence the way we feel, think and behave. I can help you understand "why" so that you can change and feel better.... or perhaps gain the tools needed to ask someone else to change.

First, I believe it is my duty to be able to actively listen to my client, obtain a good understanding of where they are and where they want to go. Together, we will move you and/or your team or organization in the desired direction to reach your goals. As a young man growing up in North Chicago, I quickly learned that life is full of rewards and upsets, if I allowed it to happen. At 3 months old, I was abandoned by my mother, left inside of a garbage can in an alley waiting to die. However, life had other plans for me. A passerby heard my faint cries and pulled me from the garbage can. Later, I was adopted but went on to experience years of physical and emotional abuse by my adopted mother. At the age of 12, I ran away from home and was placed in foster care. I was adopted again, but I experienced more mental and physical abuse. I dropped out of the 9th grade and began running away again. At the age of 16, the authorities declared me an emancipated teenager . With a story like mine, you would probably think there was no hope for finding happiness or for finding quality of life. However, I have learned to use my negative experiences as a testimony to reach out and help others.

I have worked with adolescent boys and men for the past ten plus years in various ways.
I am a therapist of color that is passionate about helping other people thrive in every area of life. Living in a society where we aren't given permission to express our emotions or given the skills to handle them can lead us to a place of feeling stuck, isolated, and confused. Whether it's feeling low or depressed from life circumstances, anger from past trauma and injustices, or just feeling tired of being sick and tired; I have experienced all of these things and want to help you examine and unpack the troubles you are experiencing in life. In my practice, I create a space for you to be the authentic you with no judgment or shame

Thus, I strive to make evidence-based adolescent and adult psychotherapy accessible to the people who need it the most; I offer a sliding scale, am willing to discuss/accommodate even more severe financial hardship situations, and I'm available on weekends.
I’m an associate licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist who specializes in helping teenagers and adults improve their quality of life by healing big and small traumas through Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy. As undesirable symptoms (e.g., depression; anxiety; and numbing behaviors such as isolation, avoidance, and addiction) are often the result of unprocessed trauma, healing the pain can change your life for the better.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
