I AM NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. Why get therapy? It's hard work and involves change. But for most people, it's worth it. Therapy is taking care of and investing in yourself. It means you are ready to look at the parts of your life that are not working well-the parts that are hurt, broken or in pain. As your therapist, I will listen with empathy and compassion. Together, we will establish goals and focus on what might make your life better by helping you build resilience and develop coping skills. Through this work, you can learn to be in healthy relationships with others and ultimately with yourself.

Given your past, your current place in life makes sense. You've either been able to respond skillfully (mindfully and rationally) or you've been forced to respond out of fear - for the sake of survival - leading you to patterns of anxiety or depression or thoughts and behaviors that are unwelcome. My goal is to help liberate you from what is felt to be limiting, unhealthy or painful.

I believe your well being is all about you - your progress, your presence, your potential, and your peace. The pace of life is dizzying and often disorienting even for the healthiest person. We all bump up against obstacles and events that cause us to pause, reflect and assess the road we are traveling. Sometimes the moment is brief. At other times it is protracted and complicated. I'm here to explore life's turns and detours so that, together, we may restore these moments for a useful purpose.

Things beyond our control in life sometimes shake loose issues that we thought we were past. Coping that has worked before, no longer seems to work or is even now getting in our way in our lives. There are sometimes moments where we can't see beyond the here and now which makes us believe that things will always be the way they currently are. These are pivotal life moments that allow us the opportunity to seek a different path. This may be the time to begin to seek guidance or dig deeper into our issues in order to grow.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
