My therapeutic approach views each person as an individual with unique strengths and challenges, and emphasizes the value of building a therapeutic relationship with the individual. When working with a child, I also want to build a relationship with the caregiver. Developing the client and family's strengths will be the foundation to support the change.

Therapy is a place for yourself or your loved one to take time to build self-care, self-reflection, insight and skills to manage the symptoms they are experiencing. Many adults and youth experience symptoms of depression, anxiety or are overcoming issues of past trauma that plays in to their ability to go about life. Sometimes relationships, school or work are harder to navigate, build or maintain. Sometimes self-esteem and self-worth can interfere with our abilities to experience healthy relationships whether that is with friends, peers or family members. Coming to therapy can help you build skills to navigate these hardships.

I enjoy working with people who are interested in exploring their story. Often we face struggle and trauma in our life that cause us to behave in certain ways. My clients are often asking themselves why they behave in a certain way even if it is not working for them. They are curious about how past hurts and struggles may still be impacting them to this day.

When we go through significant life changes, strained relationships, or difficult experiences, it makes sense to feel lonely, stuck, or confused about how to move forward. Feelings of anxiety, depression, shame, guilt, stress and worry are common, normal parts of life that can give us important information about what we may need. I specialize in helping you identify, notice, and heal the barriers that are keeping you from connecting meaningfully with yourself, the people you love, and the world you care about.

We all experience hurt, worry, and stressful experiences along our life journey. When you are most exhausted and vulnerable, therapy can provide hope and direction towards healing. Sometimes going at it alone isn’t enough, and we need someone to walk alongside us as we work through life. My aim in therapy is to help you with life's complexities by strengthening your hope and purpose and finding a pathway to meet that goal. There is no judgment, shame, or guilt but a safe place for vulnerable moments for everyone, regardless of background, political position, or belief system.

As a military Chaplain and relationship coach for over 20 years, I have worked with individuals & couples from every demographic. Working together, we have tackled a diverse and comprehensive list of challenges. I have learned from my own life, and decades of clinical experience, that we all have struggles and most often they are a consequence of avoiding emotional/psychological or spiritual pain. My passion is assisting people in their pursuit of purpose, meaning, and healing. I have found that wholeness, restoration, and joy come as we willingly walk the path to healing through the corridor of emotional pain.

I have advanced training in the Gottman Method .
Even though it may not seem like it, often times our symptoms are messengers from a deep part of our own psyche, sent to inform us that we need to find new ways of relating to ourselves and those around us in order to reach our next level of growth. My philosophy is one of wholeness; our bodies, emotions, thoughts, and background work in unison to inform our present experience. It is my goal to help you find more flexibility within your experience, so that you can move towards the life that you truly want to be living.

My approach to counseling is to focus on strengths and help to assist with solutions rather than telling my patients what to do. My focus is to address short-term problems as well as long-term psychological well-being. The more you can tell me about what and how you are feeling, the more effectively I will be able to assist you in resolving your personal problems and issues. I believe all individuals are deserving of acceptance, respect, compassion, and understanding, and all children are capable of success in academics, extracurricular activities, and social interactions.

For 28 years, I've worked with clients to support healing around trauma, marriage/partnering, sexuality, grief, depression/anxiety, addictions. Using Somatic Experiencing, family of origin, meditation/movement work, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Internal Family Systems, I work with clients to help them develop a deeper sense of self, to face life's inevitable challenges with clarity and resources. Emphasized is the capacity to stay emotionally present, to attune, differentiate, have healthy boundaries, practice dual awareness and have clarity about attachment issues.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
