Through authenticity and relevancy, my aim is to accept and be with you where you are in life, but strive to help and guide you to a place where you want to be instead. Identity exploration around race, culture, and gender is a passion of mine, as well as pre-teens, teens, and families. Therapeutic techniques I use include, but aren't limited to: DBT, CBT, play therapy, and art therapy.

Life happens and we often have little control over it. In spite of the pain we may experience as a result, we are equipped with the tools that we need to minimize unnecessary suffering. Therapy can help us reclaim and develop those tools so we can navigate life's challenges and live the life we want.

Navigating an increasingly complex and demanding world can leave many of us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, disordered and depressed. We carry within our hearts a deep yearning for soulful purpose, inner tranquility and intimate connection but often feel we are just surviving. My greatest passion is to help people find their power; to teach them to creatively work with their inner and outer worlds; and to aid them in healing from the things that hold them back. As they do so, they find vitality again, claim and live their gifts and affect change not only for themselves, but also for their families, communities and the world at large.

Change, worry, and upsets are a given. But so is the ability to adjust, heal, create, plan and live more fully. Challenging life experiences can cause us to feel stuck: grief, trauma, unending decision-making, constant fear or worry. We suffer when we are not flowing in heart, head and body. When we carry too much emotional pain, we need to move from isolation to connectedness, gain insight, and find our way.

Do you feel like you can't quit thinking about painful things that happened to you? Do you wish you could be more like the "you" before the trauma happened? Trauma can make you feel lonely and afraid. You can feel torn between wanting to talk about what happened versus keeping it all locked inside. I know it's hard to take that first step to get help, but once you start to talk about it with someone who knows how to help you heal, you can begin to work to reclaim the life you feel you lost.

Hello and Welcome. I currently have Friday and Saturday appointments available. There are any number of reasons why someone seeks help from a psychotherapist. These starting points are unique to each person. Yet there is often an awareness that a remedy of some kind is needed. This realization may not make securing support any easier. Talking to someone about your concerns, thoughts and feelings can be helpful. I strive to listen attentively and share my thoughts simply.

My training is in systems therapy, which examines how the many facets of our lives interact. In therapy, we often look at how surrounding relationships and past experiences effect our current beliefs and values. If emotions and mood are difficult to manage, or there is difficulty adjusting to developmental and life stage changes, I offer support and tools to work through this. These challenges often arise for young adults, new mothers, managing intimate relationships and employment transitions. Too often, grief and loss bring up painful struggles for individuals and families. Therapy can be helpful in these most challenging times.

Sometimes in our lives, we can become overwhelmed by emotions that feel like they could blow us over. Letting ourselves feel these emotions may seem like too much or too inconvenient. As a result, we may begin to hide these emotions through denial, isolation from loved ones, or by acting out. Of course, over time, this can be exhausting and lonely. It can also take a toll on our relationships, as well as our physical, emotional and spiritual health. My hope for you and I is to collaboratively discover ways to meet moments of challenge with openness and kindness.

Deep, respectful understanding is one of the most important things to have from someone. I have found that when one receives this deep respect, great reservoirs of untapped strength are opened. Through it, I have seen people find hope, creativity, and happiness.

Welcome! My name is Dan Meier and I am a relational, psychodynamic therapist. In practice, this means I work collaboratively with my clients and pay special attention to stories, embodied messages, and relational dynamics. I work this way because I believe harm and healing both take place within the context of relationship. Counseling offers the opportunity to explore our painful stories in the presence of an attuned, compassionate professional and rediscover our hope. Together, you and I will work toward meaningful change, greater self-acceptance, and deep healing.

How can I find a therapist in Shoreline?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
