Welcome! My name is Dan Meier and I am a relational, psychodynamic therapist. In practice, this means I work collaboratively with my clients and pay special attention to stories, embodied messages, and relational dynamics. I work this way because I believe harm and healing both take place within the context of relationship. Counseling offers the opportunity to explore our painful stories in the presence of an attuned, compassionate professional and rediscover our hope. Together, you and I will work toward meaningful change, greater self- acceptance , and deep healing.

My specialty is health psychology using an ACT framework, working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, relationship problems and medical conditions including cancer and chronic pain.
In my practice I focus on teaching my clients ways build resilience to stress and get back a sense of stability and calm. If you value genuine emotional support, honest feedback, and new perspectives we might be a good match. I provide support for who have experience with expanded states of consciousness ( spontaneous awakenings, near death experiences, or therapeutic use of psilocybin, LSD). These experiences can provide tremendous opportunities for growth and healing, especially when guided with caring, competent support. My approach is kind, open-minded, grounded, and practical.

My theoretical orientation is based in a Humanistic Theory and incorporates Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy within the context of a "whole-person" centered approach.
**NOTE: wait list available; telehealth only** Self-improvement. Relationship issues. Anxiety. Unhelpful thoughts or behaviors. These are some of the concerns that bring people, just like you, to my counseling practice. I value and work with the strengths, imperfections, gifts, genetics, history and humanity of each person or family, as these aspects inform and shape who we are. I support clients in identifying a values-based direction for positive change and explore both what motivates change and the barriers that are getting in the way. Together, we create a road map to a healthier life for you or your family.

My approach draws from a variety of behavioral treatments supported by science, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy ( ACT ).
My goal for each of my clients is to help them build and sustain a life they want to live. This can seem like a daunting task, especially for the many of us who have struggled to make long-lasting changes in our mental health. As a clinical psychologist, I strive to help clients foster awareness of the underlying thoughts and behaviors that drive emotional suffering, and to help clients build a diverse repertoire of evidence-based skills for taking back control of these experiences.

Specifically, the following models inform my approach: Psychodynamic, Relational & Attachment, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and Biofeedback.
In our work together, I'll help you explore your personal history so that you can achieve a deeper understanding of your current problems and achieve greater self-awareness. I believe our early experiences and traumas show up in our current lives and can manifest themselves in a myriad of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Therefore, I view therapy as a guide moving us towards the necessary clarity needed to live more purposely, thoughtfully, and with greater self-awareness.

Thank you for visiting my profile. I provide psychotherapy and assessment services to adults (individuals, couples, and groups) who are struggling to thrive. I help others increase insight into their struggles and make concrete changes toward experiencing a more fulfilling life. During difficult times it is common to struggle with daily functioning while also trying to heal broader psychological and emotional concerns (e.g., trauma, relational struggles, problematic behavior). Therefore, I often will establish short-term and long-term goals, collaboratively with you, so that counseling can be sustainable, supportive, and effective.

Talk therapy is great, but what many of the people I work with have missed in past therapy experiences is how to implement what they have learned about themselves into their real life. Self-regulation is key and after establishing a solid foundation using skills training for increasing distress tolerance and emotion regulation, I work with people to get at the root of the problems they are experiencing by using EMDR therapy and other interventions that address the core stuff, which is often the stuff that has kept us stuck in patterns that hurt. From there, we can work on improving your relationships and personal development.

I am particularly interested in working with people struggling with the on going effects of adverse childhood experiences like abuse, neglect and loss; especially those of early childhood. Often people suffering from the painful effects of traumatic experiences have never really felt whole, known peace or felt truly acceptable. Much too often they blame themselves. Bouts of depression and anxiety are all too frequent. In therapy you undo the underlying causes of fear, shame and grief that drive depression, anxiety and dissociation. You learn to live a life that is meaningful, present focused and free from the shadows of the past.

Life can be stressful with the world constantly telling you how you "should dress", what types of friends you "should have", or what you "should be doing with your life." It can also be lonely and difficult to develop an identity with all of that worry going on. I provide a safe environment where we explore and confront the "shoulds" in your day to day so that you can have the life you want to live.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy evidence-based?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of many approaches within the field of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence-based treatment framework that has been shown to be effective in treating many mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD.

What is the difference between Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Despite being part of the CBT family of therapies, ACT differs from other approaches within this field in several important ways: First, it emphasizes acceptance over change; second, it focuses on present moment experiences rather than past experiences or future events; third it focuses on what clients can do rather than what they cannot do; and fourth it emphasizes values rather than symptoms as targets for change.

What credentials will a certified Acceptance and Commitment Therapy have?

A certified Acceptance and Commitment therapist in Shoreline will have completed specialized training in this approach at a university accredited by The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT).

How long does ACT typically take?

ACT is a relatively short-term therapy that focuses on helping you accept the things you can't change and commit to the things you can. It typically takes about eight weeks of weekly sessions with a therapist to complete the entire process. You may need to see your therapist weekly or biweekly, depending on the circumstances surrounding your situation.
