Serving the Needs of Parents. While it’s true that parenting is the hardest job you’ll ever love, you don’t have to go it alone. Have consequences stopped working leaving you at a loss in the face of difficult behaviors? Are your date night conversations only about your children? Do you find yourself repeating what your parents said to you and regretting it? Are you seeking a more peaceful co-parenting dynamic that puts your child first rather than past marital conflicts? Or maybe you are looking for ways to feel less haunted by your own childhood or past?

In therapy I connect with you in a deep way to empower you in your struggles. Most of us hope to connect with others in an intimate way and to have an impact on the world. I believe we internalize ways of relating in childhood and this informs the ways in which we relate with others in the present. The therapeutic relationship can be a safe place to see more clearly who we are in order that we might be freed to make different and conscious choices. This awareness can help you to know yourself more, to live an intentional life and have meaningful impact on the world.

I moved to Seattle in 2017 after spending the previous ten years on the East Coast in New York City and Washington, DC. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska as a Jewish gay kid who always felt “out of place” in a community where these identities were largely invisible. I also lost my mother to cancer at the tender age of 16 while attempting to accept my gay identity. As a therapist, these experiences have helped me develop resiliency and to better understand how oppressive systems can create feelings of loneliness, isolation, despair, and hopelessness. I work a lot with queer clients around belonging, open relationships, and sexual shame.

My goal is to reconnect you with the wisdom and depth in your life that make all problems workable. In fact, the worst symptoms and problems that we wrestle with often hold the seed for growth and transformation as a person. The focus of my work is with adults and couples. My practice is LGBTQ-affirmative and welcomes diversity of all kinds. I have two offices. One is located in the cozy, historical neighborhood of Wilburton and the other is located in Wallingford on Lake Union on houseboat Grace.

We all struggle in life at one point or another. However, reaching out for support can take a lot of strength and courage. For this reason, I strive to provide a safe, accepting, non-judgmental environment where you can openly explore your struggles and receive the support and guidance you need. Many times our past experiences have left us with wounds that become aggravated, causing difficulites in our relationships and daily lives. Together, we will reflect upon your emotional states, core beliefs and sources of distress to gain deeper awareness and skills for positive change and healing in these areas.

We all know that life is full of messiness, but what if we didn’t have to hold it together. What if we didn’t show a version of ourselves or wear a facade. And what if we could be really honest about our experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to find places to allow our chaos, confusion and pain to come out of hiding and be seen. My hope is that you find comfort and safety to allow the mess to show up. I believe therapy offers us the invitation to do something different — to choose a new way. It can be an uncomfortable and powerful offer to be seen, known and heard for who you really are.

Currently accepting sliding scale clients! Jedi master Yoda once said; “Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But also weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is". We often seek out therapy because something within us yearns for change. Multiple parts with their own voice, habits, and desires, vie to be heard within. Some parts may believe failure is something that makes us lesser. American culture steeps us in the idea that shame is a good motivator for change, yet it only creates more pain. By exploring our shame, our pains, and what we deeply yearn for, we can grow.

The path to healing is not one-size-fits-all or linear. Regardless of who you are, we're all out here just trying to be human. The decision to seek help is not an easy one, but my calling is to make the process feel safe, approachable, and welcomed. My goal is to be your mirror and witness to your story. I hope to create a collaborative and safe space to address your needs, achieve your goals, and bring peace and contentment to your whole self.

Like in music, sometimes in life we need to pause and listen to how the notes of our experiences resonate before moving on. The practice of pausing and reflecting offers a chance to consider the meaning of what has come before, so we can more effectively engage this moment now to ultimately yield beauty and connection with life we might have never known. This is Fermata Therapy. Here we listen to the tune of your life, past and present. With pause and reflection, we make space for you to discover and create what is needed—a different rhythm, key, or voice better suited to your melody—so you can live your most authentic life-song.

While a desire to find meaningful connection with self and others appears universal, the everyday experiences of life often hold quite the opposite. Trauma, betrayal, loss, addiction, big life changes (and we can go on and on), can contribute to a variety of mental health concerns, and perpetuate dynamics that are not life-giving. Such dynamics are hard to put into words, so you are left looking for a safe space to tell your story and gain more insight into what shaped you, what motivates you, and what supports patterns of thinking and behavior that no longer serve you.

There I am in a grocery store aisle staring at rows of crackers. So many brands, flavors, textures. "Which one?" I wonder. Sound familiar? Can I share something with you? Writing a statement to help you know me in 640 words or less feels similar. Therapy is an adventure. My suggestion: ask for a sample. I enjoy listening, understanding, and working with people and their systems (individuals, couples, families, society). My areas of interest include change/transition, resiliency, parenting/care taking, relationships, multi-faceted families, anxiety, PTSD, grief/loss, chronic disease/illness.
