As a naturopathic doctor, I offer a holistic approach to mental health. I work with patients who are dealing with anxiety, depression, insomnia , fatigue, difficulty with concentration and poor memory. Often these symptoms are hand in hand with gastrointestinal issues, headaches, irregular or painful menses, infertility and other hormonal imbalances. By treating the whole person I can get to the root cause of the symptoms, looking at genetic, dietary/lifestyle, and other factors that might be contributing. I do not offer mental health counseling, however I work closely with several therapists to offer collaborative care.

Areas of clinical specialty include: Assisting with life transition issues impacting quality of life and adaptation to aging; treatment of sleep problems in healthy individuals and persons with contributing medical co-morbidities, including menopause vasomotor symptoms, chronic pain, and dementia; and caregiver training for managing neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia.
I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with midlife and older adults. I use a contextual behavioral science approach to provide evidence-based treatment for enhancing quality of life in healthy aging adults, and also in individuals experiencing age-related changes in physical, cognitive, or psychological function, disturbances in sleep , or residential care transitions and adjustments. I recognize the broad and complex contextual factors that influence the aging process and welcome interdisciplinary collaboration.

Hypnosis creates a natural bridge between mind and body, and it's a proven method for relieving pain, improving sleep , releasing anxiety, and replacing self-sabotage with new choices. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention creating a heightened openness and awareness. This state allows the mind to gently access deep creative resources, and in clinical hypnosis, we can then apply these resources to your goals for change.

While I work differently with everyone, I often employ motivational interviewing, mindfulness- and meditation-based interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and treatments to help people sleep better.
Over the last 17 years, I've worked with a diverse group of child, teenage, and adult clients (individuals and couples) across a wide range of settings, both inpatient and outpatient. I use a client-directed approach, where you and I collaborate to determine what the therapy process will look like, rather than the therapist taking the "expert role" on your life. Some of the problems I most often help people with are depression, insomnia , anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, grief & trauma, and adjustment to life's stressors and changes. I work with clients only over telehealth (and did even before covid).

Many of my clients need help with anxiety, pain, bad habits, relationships, sexuality, fears, and phobias. Issues my clients have and specific treatment areas (see my web site) range from tooth grinding, reducing chronic pain, improving performance in sports, stopping smoking, weight loss, anxiety about medical or dental procedures, sex issues, sleep problems, spiritual conflicts, setting goals and addressing mental "blocks," resolving past issues in life, to improving relationships. I help people learn to relax and how to have personal "tools" to "dial down" stress, pain, and anxiety to become healthy, happy, and centered.

Experiencing challenges and distress is an inherent aspect of life, as is our ability to access the resources and strengths to meet these challenges. We have developed patterned ways of being and thinking that may not serve us the way they used to resulting in anxiety, restlessness, depression, withdrawal, sleep disruption, relational conflict, loss of interest in life, or dissatisfaction with work to name a few. I view therapy as a hopeful process of self-discovery and meaning-making that leads to lasting changes including improved mental and emotional well-being and behavior change. I offer individual therapy for adults and teens.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
