I love working with people who have come to a place in their lives where they want to make changes. Something is not working and they want to create a life with more joy, freedom, love, and integrity. Perhaps they are struggling with depression and anxiety, traumatic memories, difficult relationships, or grief, or perhaps they simply have the sense that they are not living fully. I work with my clients to establish a trusting relationship where they can speak honestly of the matters that most impact them and the events where they have felt anger, fear, grief, and shame.

As a trauma-informed therapist, I am passionate about walking along side others on their journey toward wholeness and healing. I work primarily with adults, adolescents, and children experiencing a wide range of emotional or behavioral issues. All of us have experienced suffering or relational brokenness within our stories that can feel confusing or hard to address. While we are most often harmed in relationship, it is also in relationship that we heal. It is my hope that in our sessions, you will experience the relief of engaging the hard moments of your story in the presence of a supportive witness as you move toward healing.

You dream of a life that feels peaceful and exciting, challenging yet manageable, connected and secure. You know where you want to be, you’re just not sure how to get there yet. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, with a combined 20 years of advocacy and clinical experience, I continually marvel at how profoundly strong, resilient, and adaptive humans are and the many ways, usually unconsciously, that we develop to navigate and cope within our uniquely formative personal, familial, and cultural contexts. Often these coping skills that served us so well in childhood, as we dealt with difficult experiences and/or trauma, do not work as well once we become adults and move into new contexts. It can be scary when coping strategies, that used to help, no longer provide the solace and comfort they once did.

I have training in EMDR, trauma-informed modalities, and extensive experience in treating PTSD and sexual abuse in women.
My own experiences with anxiety and trauma made me curious about healing—not just surviving, but actually feeling better. More connected, more alive, more myself. I’m not your average talk therapist. I love swimming in the deep- always with the goal of real, lasting change. I’m not afraid of your big feelings, messy patterns, or the stuff you don’t say out loud. I feel at home sitting with people in their hardest, most honest moments.

Individuals seek therapy to make life changes, try new behaviors, and learn to heal/grow. Often, this is precipitated by a crisis demanding such growth. I encourage clients to gather and bolster personal resources in order to address problems they are struggling with and create new ways of thinking/believing. Our work will focus on the presenting issue, previous coping attempts, related emotions, and possible alternatives. Effective therapy may include unresolved family-of-origin issues, the building of interpersonal skills, and/or the resolution of unhealthy views of self or others and unprocessed trauma.

Trauma impacts every area of our lives, often leaving us overwhelmed and exhausted in our attempt to restore what has been lost. Healing begins when we lean into the hurt; engaging our body, and patiently remaining in the spaces within us that need comfort, understanding, and care. In our sessions together, we will work to create containment for the present, healing for the past, and hope for the future. This means developing the skills and tools needed to begin processing what has created the fear, hurt, anger, and sadness in your life, and cultivate in it's place hope, wholeness, peace, and healing.

As people, we are the result of every event we have ever experienced, and these events can be joyous or traumatic. When the traumas are at the forefront, constantly creeping in, or just lingering in the background, it can feel like the trauma has taken over your life. There are ways to heal and it does not need to be alone. I want to support my clients through processing whatever past experiences they may have had. I want to shape therapeutic relationships to be what works best for each client based on their past experiences.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
