Self-Harming Therapists in Seattle, WA
Insight is the cornerstone of change. Oftentimes we know something is wrong, and
what we would like to see different but the process of doing so is muddled and
uncertain. You may be uncertain in how to identify and express your feelings, have
complicated relationships, a shaky self-concept, have experienced severe trauma, or a
variety of concerns. Therapy is a way to sift through complex emotions, memories and
motivations to determine your path forward; what you want to retain, discard, or change. Therapy is like a tough hike: sometimes I will lead, sometimes you will lead, but I’ll always make sure we’re safe as we do.

Maybe you even end up doing things that you regret later, such as self-harming or yelling at someone you care about.
But maybe it doesn’t have to be this way. Imagine going through your day knowing that you can finish everything you need to while still having enough time for fun, friends, and relaxing. When you have a project, you are able to start on time (or even early, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here). You are able to open up and ask for help from others.

As a licensed mental health counselor, I work primarily with teens and young adults. I love the opportunity to support young people as they grow and overcome challenges in their lives. I believe that you and your family are doing the best you can with the tools you have, and if you’re searching for a therapist, you likely need more support to thrive. I'm especially skilled at working with youth who have experienced trauma or who struggle with anxiety, depression and/or self-harm. As of December 2024, I have availability for in-person services on Wednesdays or Fridays.

Does this sound familiar? You struggle to manage your emotions, and you don’t understand why your mood seems to go from 0 to 100 at the drop of a hat. Like a leaf in the wind, the slightest breeze seems to send you into a spiral. People around you tiptoe on eggshells because they don't know the right thing to do or say to support you. You feel hopeless about the future and sometimes hurt yourself in the process of trying to manage it all. If this sounds like you, you're in the right place.

When I was a teen, I had my first experience of individual therapy and realized the value that can come from a strong connection to a helping professional that wants to take the time to really see, hear, and understand their clients. I endeavor to be this sort of therapist with each of my clients, seeing them for their unique experience, personality, struggles, and strengths.

Many of my clients come to me feeling like they’ve tried everything, yet nothing works long term. I believe healing begins with a strong therapeutic relationship; one built on trust, safety, and collaboration. With experience providing intensive, in-home, and community-based interventions, I take a hands-on practical approach to therapy. Together, we’ll explore new strategies, strengthen resilience and create lasting change. When hope feels distant, I’ll hold it with you until you can hold it again yourself.

We all have the ability within ourselves to make changes and to live our best lives, yet often times we can get in our own way of that progress. Difficulties in our lives are often linked to problems in our relationships with people close to us. Therapy can help us examine our behavior and create ways so that we can remove the roadblocks keeping us from improving upon our relationships. I use many dynamic forms of treatment in order to help you reach these goals. I base my practice in the belief that therapy in itself is relationship-based.

The psychic wounding left from feeling unseen, unheard, or unsafe in the spaces meant to hold us with care can be profound and run deep. I work with a range of experiences, but feel particularly called to support those navigating the lasting impact of relational trauma, emotional neglect, narcissistic abuse, and complex family systems. These dynamics can erode our ability to trust our instincts, recognize our needs, maintain boundaries, and connect authentically with ourselves, with others, and to the world around us.

It's common to struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, relationship issues, and meaning-making, but learning how to navigate those issues is so tricky. As a trauma-informed counselor, I understand that moving into alignment with what we want isn't easy and it's a learned skill to turn toward it anyway. My aim is to be an ally amongst challenges with repetitive cycles. I know from personal experience that accessibility to mental health can feel like it's only for people with money. Taking Medicaid is a huge value of mine because support should be available for everyone.

If you're looking for providers who treat eating disorders and specifically binge eating disorder, I'm here for you. I come from a Health At Every Size (HAES) framework and believe that no body is a problem to be solved. I have found that for many folks, eating disorders are at an intersection of other mental health concerns (such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, generational trauma) and / or marginalized identities (such as LGBTQIA+, neurodivergence, being in a larger body, people of color, children of immigrants).

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
