As a licensed
marriage
and family therapist (LMFT), I have a special interest in supporting parents and stepparents, parent-child relationships, multiracial families, couples experiencing sexual and intimacy issues, and people experiencing trauma, grief and loss, and oppression associated with racial, socioeconomic, and LGBTQIA+ identities.
It’s hard to be a person. Even when life is at its most joyful, our relationships, our pasts, and the constant presence of change can be overwhelming, confusing, or defeating. I’m here to help with that. Therapy is my second career. I chose this work because I believe everybody deserves nonjudgmental support, whether they are in crisis, preparing for change, or simply stuck. I have seen what can happen when pain has no witness. I have also experienced the transformations that can take place when hurt and struggle are seen, heard, and met with compassion, understanding, and perspective.

As a licensed
marriage
& family therapist, my training in both psychotherapy and family systems has created a unique clinical lens & understanding of client symptoms in the context of their relationships and the powerful influences exerted.
At the edge of your comfort zone is where your journey begins. Challenges are part of life and although we navigate most with courage and confidence, there are times we feel powerless and stuck. By exploring new strategies for understanding our difficulties, we construct a different lens for viewing hardships and subsequently discover our unique capabilities and emerge stronger and wiser. Whether you are a parent struggling with the evolving dynamic of communication with your children, or a partner grappling with the ebb and flow in one's relationship, these are our most essential opportunities for a life changing transformation.

I have learned that people can deeply disappoint you, and that your heart can be hopelessly broken. I have learned that marriages will turn stagnant and stale and that you will war within your body while no one else is looking. I have learned you will get dizzy from circling within your conflicted relationship with no signs of light at the end of the tunnel. I've learned that your
marriage
can come to be the place you feel most lost and alone. In my psychotherapy practice, we will start with where you are.

The areas of difficulty that I work with are broad and include individual concerns as well as relationship problems of any kind, such as
marital
or parent/child conflict.
For over 40 years I have worked with families, couples, individual adults, and children to help them feel better about themselves and their lives. I have taught people skills at communicating which can help them take care of their needs and not interact in ways that can damage relationships or others' self esteem. Because counseling involves healing on all levels--the body, the emotions and the mind--I help people learn how to heal themselves, and in turn help others to heal. My approach is holistic and client-centered where I integrate therapeutic modalities according to the person's needs.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
