Mending our hearts and minds is an act of loving ourselves. Stress of life and relationships, personal history, and even your thoughts can leave you feeling empty, overwhelmed, constantly processing or numbing. Let therapy be a place for radical self care. Areas of specialty for me are working with client's on relationship and family issues, trauma, anxiety, psychosis, and depression. I am passionate about work with people who identify as biracial or mulitracial, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+. Availability Mondays and Tuesdays before 3PM.

I work with people dealing with emotional problems that manifest as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and trauma. The encounters with emotions seem powerful, overwhelming, and mysterious. They may feel so powerful, that you push away, stuff down, use substances, or even allow the emotions to direct your actions and thoughts. It can feel confusing of how you can build strength to overcome emotional wounds. How do you make sense of what doesn’t always make sense? Exploring your emotions with a therapist can be healing and encouraging.

As a clinical therapist, I help people who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and loss. I teach my clients to practice what I call "the reverse golden rule": treat yourself as you would treat others! We are often so critical of ourselves, while with a friend we would be kind, supportive, compassionate. My 20+ years of experience have given me the tools to work using an eclectic approach that I tailor to each client. I offer a comfortable, safe environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, where you can feel heard, understood and validated.

I believe that therapy can help us see the unconscious patterns of behavior that we unknowingly live our lives within; that it can help us find some distance from our up-close feelings, and see ourselves with kindness; that it can bring vitality to stagnation, and enliven our sense of creativity; that it can help us pursue our desires; that it can be a place where we wrestle with the things we thought were true, and find comfort in the midst of uncertainty; that it can reveal something about the relationships we seek; and that it can teach us how to grieve our yesterdays, find gratitude for today, and hope for tomorrow.

For years I've saved a delightful comic by Randy Glasbergen that shows a human counseling client lying on a couch with a therapist sitting next to him. The therapist is a dog who says: "My therapy is quite simple: I wag my tail and lick your face until you feel good about yourself again." Although I don't have a tail and I don't lick anyone's face, I think there's a lot of truth in that canine counselor's style of therapy. As a matter of fact, I think that helping people feel good about themselves is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of my work.

In this day and age we have so many things pulling us in all directions. We have doctors appointments, school functions, social gatherings and so many other things where we constantly have to send our energy. Sometimes it can be hard to remember to take care of our mental health in there as well. Prioritizing this is so very important though. It is what helps us to be able to not just survive but also thrive.

We are all alive and trying to learn something about living; we live the way that we feel. We do this automatically (and whether we know it or not) in relationship: in relating to our self and to others. Therefore, my philosophy is everything is emotional and relational and mindful; everything matters.

What is your body telling you? Do you or your child/teen ever have that heart-beating fast, sweaty palms, knees shaking, upset stomach, foggy brain feeling? Ever notice these feelings during social events, big life decisions or transitions, in relationships or in particularly overwhelming environments? Do these sensations ever result in feelings of being discouraged, exhausted and preferring to be alone? These are just a few examples of how our bodies can communicate overwhelm or overstimulation of a lived experience. Our mind-body connection can make a huge impact in our ability to regulate and manage these sensations.

I work with couples, family members, and individuals experiencing conflict, disconnection or distress in their intimate relationships. Couples who come to see me say things like: "We've had a breakdown in communication;" "We just can't seem to get along;" "I'm feeling unappreciated by my spouse/partner," "We've tried but we can't seem to work through this issue on our own;" "We want to rebuild trust after a betrayal;" "We're struggling to feel close after the transition to parenthood;" and "We love each other very much but we can't stop fighting."

Feelings of despair, anxiety, rage, confusion, hopelessness, and depression are normal responses to a broken world. This brokenness manifests as oppression, inequality, trauma, destruction, and violence. Sometimes it can seem impossible to feel whole given the state of things. And yet, it is my deeply held belief that we can heal both individually and collectively, to find ourselves whole again, belonging.
