Maybe depression, anxiety, or trauma are causing fear and insecurity, or behaviors like substance use, binge eating, or gambling have you feeling out of control.
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist focused on helping clients break free from unhelpful thought and behavior patterns. In order to make change, I support clients in recognizing the function of these patterns and learning the skills to cope more effectively. I work with clients to incorporate their personal values and life context into their treatment plan.

When life starts to feel overwhelming, fatiguing, and chaotic, reaching out for help can be especially difficult. Then as the challenges and issues of life become impossible, we start to lose hope. The truth is, we all have the ability to live a more abundant life, no matter how difficult our circumstances may be. Things like addictions, trauma, anxiety, depression, and difficult relationships can all be barriers to abundance. While these barriers may seem overwhelming, they don’t have to define you or prevent you from healing, growth, and a life that is full. When you can’t get past these barriers on our own, it’s okay to get help.

Personal finances and financial behavior are just as much about feelings as they are about finances. Recognizing how money makes you feel (ashamed, anxious, overwhelmed, insecure, etc.) will allow you to better understand yourself and to manage your money in a way that makes you feel empowered. Compulsive spending, financial enabling, financial avoidance, and financial conflict are just a few of the reasons someone might seek financial therapy.

My goal as a therapist is to assist clients in living healthy, fulfilling lives. I do this through helping clients identify goals they want to work toward, personal strengths on which they can build, skills they want to develop, and barriers they want to overcome. My work is client-centered and strengths-based, recognizing that change often takes time, hard work, and patience. Thus, I move with clients at their pace, knowing that recovery looks different for everyone and that there isn’t one approach to fit all clients. As a therapist, I strive to create a safe space for clients so they can develop trust and evaluate their life.

Sometimes you don’t know why, but you recognize you are more stressed than usual, worrying more, taking more risks, withdrawing from activities, or aren’t as present in relationships as you’d like to be. Sometimes you know why, but you don’t know what to do about it. Sometimes you know what to do about it, but you find yourself stuck. Regardless of where you might fall on this continuum, we can find a path forward together. I work 1-on-1 with young adults and adults struggling with alcohol and/or drugs, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. I have a particular interest in working with people struggling with substance misuse.

As a clinical therapist, I help people who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and loss. I teach my clients to practice what I call "the reverse golden rule": treat yourself as you would treat others! We are often so critical of ourselves, while with a friend we would be kind, supportive, compassionate. My 20+ years of experience have given me the tools to work using an eclectic approach that I tailor to each client. I offer a comfortable, safe environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, where you can feel heard, understood and validated.

Gambling Therapists

How do gambling rehabilitation programs work?

There are both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs. However, for some individuals, an outpatient facility may not offer enough hands-on care, and for other individuals, an inpatient facility may be too much. Both types of care have knowledgeable health professionals including physicians (in the case of residential programs), psychologists, counselors, psychotherapists, and recovered mentors.

How do gambling 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Abstinence and maintenance are key for 12-step gambling disorder programs. Individuals in a 12-step group rely on each other for support and accountability. In addition, there is often a spiritual element to these programs, whereby belief in a higher power can help the individual overcome their tendencies. If an individual genuinely wants to cease gambling, attending a 12-step program along with regular psychotherapy can be highly effective.

How long does therapy take for gambling disorder?

Recovering from gambling disorder takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but a person can see change if they stick with therapy and if they have the will and desire to stop. Treatment for gambling disorder requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers, as well as the development of coping skills. Making lifestyle changes is also important, such as staying away from lotteries, online gambling, and casinos.

Is relapse a problem for those with a gambling disorder?

Gambling disorder is often chronic and can be life-long; therefore relapse may present a problem for some individuals. But effective treatment can bring a person’s life under control. To remain healthy and on track, the individual may need to regularly check in with their support group or psychotherapist. Frequently refreshing their tools of recovery can be helpful.
