You may be seeking therapy because you find yourself repeating the same unhelpful patterns – in your relationships, at work or school, or in how you feel and think about yourself – but you don’t seem able to change them. Or you may be concerned about the emotional or behavioral patterns that your child or
teenager
is developing, and not know how to help them.

It you're reading this then you're taking the first step to getting help with how you're living your life. I find that most people who seek therapy are struggling with some pain or conflict they cannot overcome with the skills and support currently present in their lives. Talking to a trained professional about your troubles can bring relief and help you to make changes. I work with individuals and couples to help them overcome obstacles in their lives such as unrealized potential, feelings of being overwhelmed or hopeless, relationship troubles, constant stress, and self-destructive behaviors.

At the edge of your comfort zone is where your journey begins. Challenges are part of life and although we navigate most with courage and confidence, there are times we feel powerless and stuck. By exploring new strategies for understanding our difficulties, we construct a different lens for viewing hardships and subsequently discover our unique capabilities and emerge stronger and wiser. Whether you are a parent struggling with the evolving dynamic of communication with your children, or a partner grappling with the ebb and flow in one's relationship, these are our most essential opportunities for a life changing transformation.

I seek to provide a therapeutic relationship with children and youth in a healing space that invites self-compassion, self-acceptance, and self- mastery through play and creative expression. When helping and healing children and youth I believe that lasting change comes from a family systems perspective. The family is the child’s support system and when the family’s needs are considered then the child’s needs will be met more effectively. My hope is to help families communicate better within barriers and to develop solutions that honor the unique strengths of the family.

I am a Licensed Psychologist with over 40 years of experience. My greatest strength as a therapist is helping clients to be aware of what they feel and to make decisions about how they are going to express those feelings in their daily living. I am a highly interactive therapist, guiding exploration within a session, challenging restrictive beliefs and unproductive behaviors clients may have held since childhood, and offering direction for behavior beyond the session. My book, "The Freedom Handbook; How Being True To Yourself Can Set You Free" was published in 2021.

Isolation is the killer. For many
adolescent
and adult males influences to pivot away from isolation and towards healing, connection, and growth is complex, challenging, and hopeful. My clients are invited to explore their “painful wounds” and discover how their pain’s influence leads to self-identity issues, certain behaviors, relationships, and patterns that decrease movement toward growth. Growth towards living with a full heart of emotions, less ambiguity, finding increased purpose, and engaged relationships. Growth towards self-compassion and employing in their lives what they value most.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
