I work with adults navigating anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, relationship challenges, questions of identity, and significant life transitions. Many of my clients are thoughtful, insightful people who have spent much of their lives adapting to difficult experiences but find that the strategies that once helped no longer support the life or relationships they want today. Together, we'll explore the strategies you've developed throughout your life, understand the role they've played, and consider whether they continue to support the person you're becoming.

Something brought you here. Maybe it's exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix. Maybe it's the quiet sense that you've drifted from yourself. You've spent years showing up for everyone else. What you may have lost along the way is a sense of what you actually need. Therapy is the space where that changes. We start with your story — what you've carried, what it cost, where you want to go. Then we build a path forward grounded in your values, strengths, and dreams. You already hold more wisdom about yourself than you may think. My job is to help you find it and walk alongside you as you build it. If this resonates, I'd love to connect.

I am a queer relational psychotherapist with a focus of working with the LGBT/Queer community. I work primarily with folks in the queer/trans/poly/kink community. Whether you want to use therapy to talk specifically about issues related to these identities or just want a space where you don't have to define a lot of terms, I could be a good fit. I tend to work with folks on relationship issues, gender transitions, long term trauma, managing mental health diagnoses (like biploar) and substance use issues. My official training is in psychodynamic relational therapy, which is a depth-orientated way of working.

I'm Jameela Muhammad, founder of The Melanated Therapist. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or carrying the weight of things that were never yours to hold, you’re not alone. I created this practice for people like you who are ready to heal from generational wounds, life transitions, and everyday stress that too often goes unspoken, especially in minority communities. I work with adolescents and adults navigating trauma, relationships, and identity, and I aim to make therapy feel like a real, grounded conversation because healing doesn’t have to be clinical to be powerful.

Making the decision to enter therapy can be a difficult decision, especially when trying to find a therapist who is the right fit. I don’t believe anyone should feel ambivalent about their therapist. The priority is finding someone who provides a safe space for sharing your story without judgment. Questions that might run through your mind: "Do I need therapy?" "Will talking to someone help me?" "I (we) went before. How will this time be different?" I recognize that not everyone needs therapy, but I think everyone can benefit from the support of an objective and compassionate person to empower growth.

You’ve been circling the same challenges for too long & it’s wearing you out. Anxiety, stress & trauma keep showing up no matter how hard you try. You’ve tried all the things & put in real effort, yet the peace and joy you’re searching for still feel out of reach. Giving up feels close, even though you know you don’t want to quit. Injuries still haunt you, showing you what still needs healing. You’ve tried therapy and gained some useful tools, but you’re still craving deep, lasting change. You’re done with band-aids and surface-level fixes. You’re ready for something deeper. Something that will bring greater peace & joy in life.

My belief is that we are all human trying to learn and grow in an ever changing environment. Change for some can be difficult to cope with and result in maladaptive coping skills and other mental health concerns when emotions overwhelm us. I believe that the therapy relationship should always be collaborative and I approach every individual differently to meet their needs with where they are in life. In the therapy process we will assess your different environments and relationships to help understand your current barriers you are seeking help with.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
