Individual therapy often centers around identity development and exploration, development of supportive coping skills, and processing the daily struggles and challenges folks face as they navigate their lives in this ever-changing world. In work with those seeking relationship support, I enjoy helping clients in resolving conflict, increasing emotional and physical intimacy, and working on breaking down communication barriers.

Ever think: "How did I end up here?" or "I never imagined {life event} would happen to me!" You are not alone! We can all relate to these sentiments. Most people do not end up in therapy because circumstances are unicorns and rainbows. Are you struggling with loss, or making meaning out of events that have left you feeling uncertain, shaken, in agony? Do you feel like you are starring in a scene from the film Ground Hog Day, where life is a series of frustrating, repeating events? You can make a successful transition to break this cycle, whatever that personal change is. You will get a sense of control back. A little Zen. Some hope.

Life doesn’t get better by chance - it gets better by change. That change often begins when painful patterns are finally named. I work with couples and individuals navigating disconnection, infidelity, and major life transitions, including pregnancy and the postpartum period. Many people I see are asking, How did we get here? or Why does this feel so hard right now? Therapy can be a space where the pressure comes off, the truth gets spoken, and things begin to make sense again. You’re not broken - and you don’t have to do this alone.

Over the past eight years, it has been such a pleasure walking with my clients through their journeys of healing and change. I have had the privilege of sitting with parents struggling through the heartache of divorce, immigrants and children of immigrants who are making a home against all odds, college students fighting dominant culture norms, survivors of marital abuse, and those fighting to escape their childhood trauma. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in education and non-profits in India, and I am astounded, then and now, by the human capacity for resilience and strength in the face of hardship.

You’ve done all the "right" things but life still doesn't feel the way you want it to. From the outside, things look pretty good and others think you have it together, but the truth is you’re anxious and overwhelmed most of the time. You’re tired of just coping and ready to actually feel better. Whether you’re going through (or contemplating) a big life change, struggling in relationships, grieving the loss of a pet, feeling stuck, or sensing something from your past is holding you back, you just want things to be different...and the surface level fixes aren’t cutting it.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
