I provide supportive, client centered therapy to encourage growth after
trauma
.
I have been honored that people have felt comfortable and safe enough in sessions to discuss their most private experiences and thoughts. People often come to see me because they're struggling to keep up with their obligations between family, career, friends, and their own self care. The frustrations sour feelings toward work and relationships. Loved ones start to notice that your temperament is not the same - you're crankier or more aloof. You may feel lonely and disconnected. Sometimes you don't even know what got you upset in the first place.

I enjoy working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and concerns. Are you experiencing depression, anxiety, life stressors, work or relationship dissatisfaction, grief, the impact from
trauma
, trouble adjusting to life transitions or illness, sleep problems, OCD, phobias, substance use issues or some other problem? I want to help you reach your optimal health, which may include both mental and physical health goals. I know it can be difficult to share such personal experiences with a new person, so it’s important to me to create a trusting bond to work on your concerns.

Often I hear from clients, who have been in talk therapy for many years, that although they cognitively understand their
trauma
and why symptoms such as anxiety and depression exist, are still struggling.
My approach is rooted in the belief that how we relate to ourselves mirrors how we experience life and develop relationships. Not many of us were taught how to compassionately attend to our painful feelings, critical thoughts, or impulsive behaviors. Instead, we may have been scolded, shamed, or sent away for showing big feelings such as anger or sadness, praised for being self-reliant, or withdrawn from by parents who did not have the capacity to be with our feelings. When we can begin to shift from judgment and avoidance of the parts of ourselves that we may not approve of to curiosity; healing can begin.

My clinical interests include
trauma
, highly sensitive people, eating disorders & disordered eating, anxiety, food's effect on mood, LGBTQ health and empowerment, and women's health and empowerment.
My path to the study of nutrition and counseling began in 2008 when my doctor helped me realize the connection between my mood and my choices in food. She suggested a dietary shift that changed my life. After many years of study and clinical work I've learned many other ways to help the brain and body through nutrition and counseling. From 2012-2014 I worked as an intern therapist at Seattle Counseling Service where I taught an ongoing Food & Mood group. Since then I have worked in private practice helping people with food and mental health issues.

The emotional wounds caused by
trauma
, or by not getting our needs met when we are young, left untreated, continue to cost us dearly. They underlie our feelings of depression, anxiety, insecurity, and rage; our unhealthy patterns including addictions, eating disorders and insomnia; and the toxic, repetitive dynamics that keep playing out in our closest relationships, despite our best intentions. These wounds also compromise our motivation to move forward in our lives, and our ability to focus our attention, to make healthy decisions and to respond appropriately to what's happening around us.

I work with adults for issues with relationships,
PTSD
, depression, anxiety, work problems.
Undergoing intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy is deeply personal. For many individuals, this adventure into unknown recesses of their psyches reveals personal vistas previously unimagined. Such exploration frequently involves painful disclosures, frightening discoveries, an extraordinary development of self-understanding, an increase in capacity for intimate sharing, and an integration of strengths and aspirations. Such a journey, with phases of both pain and exhilaration, usually takes place over an extended period.

Seeking therapy can be a daunting process, while also being one step toward greater wholeness/healing. Relationship is where we are both wounded and healed. I work with individuals seeking relief from distressing symptoms such as; demanding too much of yourself, finding it hard to trust self, your experience, your mind, self-soothing through addictive behaviors, pleasing others at your own expense, anxiety, depression,
PTSD
. Our patterns of relating develop early within our first attachments, so our journey might include visiting some of those relationships to wonder how they impact you in the here and now.

I use a blend of somatic (body-centered) treatment and evidence-based practices like cognitive behavior therapy to help support clients of all ages experiencing anxiety, depression, limiting thoughts, stuck behavioral patterns, and
trauma
.
Contrary to what movies show you about therapy, I won’t give you unwanted advice or simply nod solemnly the whole session. I bring curiosity, compassion, humor, free expression, and movement to join with my clients and help them explore what healing means to them. I hope to empower clients to access their natural abilities and to gently disrupt the unhealthy patterns we humans often get stuck in using more than traditional “talk therapy” approach. My goal is to facilitate somatic healing, so your whole body begins to feel better as you gain new awareness and get “unstuck” from the patterns you’re ready to release.

My areas of expertise include addiction and codependency recovery, relationship issues (for both individuals and couples), life transitions, and
trauma
resolution.
I believe that almost all change that occurs in therapy comes from forming a safe therapeutic relationship, and in the context of that relationship increasing your awareness of self, challenging your old beliefs, establishing appropriate boundaries in relationships with others, and experiencing and letting go of old pain. My task is to support you in that process. I tend to be active in therapy. I ask questions, offer observations, and look for patterns in the client's life. However, I believe the client is the final expert on themselves, and I trust in their unique healing process.

I work with clients who want more satisfaction and meaning in life and relationships. The pain of anxiety, low mood, ADHD, addictive or compulsive behaviors, transitions, loss,
trauma
, or relational distress motivates them to look for change. They are curious about knowing themselves more deeply, through the heart and felt-sense experience, as well as the intellect. To grow beyond the safety of the familiar self in meaningful ways, they are willing to face some discomfort and vulnerability, and commit to useful behaviors and habits. They value this one precious life they have here, and want to make the best of it.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
