At the core of my treatment philosophy is the belief that families heal when movement occurs and people begin to step out of their comfort zones to unlock their potential and capacity for growth. Often there is underlying pain and/or trauma that needs to be addressed in order for the system to recover and break the cycle. Whether the results of the family dysfunction is abuse, addiction, estrangement, divorce, suicide , broken communication paths, or some other behavior, treatment can provide relief.

Life as an ADHDer can feel like persisting in a world not built for you. Society has taught you that there's something wrong with your neurodivergence. You got that message from teachers if school became too overwhelming and you couldn't find new coping skills. Or you've had to work harder and longer at your job to still feel behind expectations. Even those closest to you may not fully understand your experiences or appreciate your strengths because of your struggles with organization, time management, impulsivity, and sensitivity. All of this is more confusing if you were diagnosed as an adult or aren't yet diagnosed.

I have been honored that people have felt comfortable and safe enough in sessions to discuss their most private experiences and thoughts. People often come to see me because they're struggling to keep up with their obligations between family, career, friends, and their own self care. The frustrations sour feelings toward work and relationships. Loved ones start to notice that your temperament is not the same - you're crankier or more aloof. You may feel lonely and disconnected. Sometimes you don't even know what got you upset in the first place.

Life can be challenging. Maybe you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stressed, confused, or stuck. Maybe the things that used to help you feel better aren’t helping so much anymore. Perhaps you are experiencing a sense of disconnection from who you want to be or from people important to you. Know that what you are feeling is valid, and you have the capacity to change. I welcome anyone seeking help, and have experience serving individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and as members of various ethnic and cultural groups. I also recognize that as a white, cisgender, hetero male, my life experience may be quite different from yours.

My healing begins from a place of connection and an appreciation of your potential and the power we have to impact each other. I will support you in your search for greater meaning, emotional awareness and empowerment in a world that can be overwhelming and isolating. We will begin a thoughtful exploration of how your past experiences and relationships impact you presently. Together we can uncover and co-create new meanings out of your experiences, and these new understandings can give you the power to relate differently to yourself and others.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
