My training and experience has primarily been with teens and adults, facing an array of challenges including sexual abuse , complicated grief, trauma, anxiety, family conflict, depression, loss, and other life-stressors.
The greatest and most freeing gifts you can give yourself are self-exploration and compassion. Together, we can work collaboratively to further develop these tools, uncover new ones, and foster your innate resilience. My goal is for you to feel safe, challenged, and empowered during our time together. The sheer fact that you are seeking assistance, demonstrates both strength and courage. I aim to create a non-judgmental, secure, and open-minded environment for clients to explore the entirety of their feelings. We will work together to problem-solve, create lasting change, and develop techniques to help overcome barriers in life.

It takes strength and courage to face your problems head on yet, if we don't we will only continue to live in doubt of ourselves and the world around us. Starting therapy is not an easy choice but, hiding behind our fears will ultimately just leave us feeling stuck. I believe we all have a warrior inside of us that can get us through anything life has to offer and I would like to be a part of the process in your discovery of this internal strength.

As a therapist, my mission is to help you improve your over-all well being, enhance your ability to engage in interpersonal relationships, empower you with useful tools, and ultimately explore and address the obstacles that may be holding you back from the life you want to live. Choosing the right therapist is an important decision and a good fit is necessary to make effective progress. I try to be straightforward, without being harsh, and encouraging without applying any pressure. My clients find me to be warm, caring, down-to-earth, and, at times, humorous.

I am dedicated to providing supportive, healthy, caring services for people in pain. I understand that betrayal, trauma, abandonment create a deep emotional wound that is frightening to explore and distressing to consider. It is possible to heal by finding you own integrity and peace. I believe that the true aim of healing is to assist the client in bringing harmony to their soul, mind, and body. My approach is rooted in the belief that how we relate to ourselves mirrors how we experience life and develop relationships. Not many of us were taught how to compassionately attend to our painful feelings, critical thoughts, or impulsive behaviors. Instead, we may have been scolded, shamed, or sent away for showing big feelings such as anger or sadness, praised for being self-reliant, or withdrawn from by parents who did not have the capacity to be with our feelings. When we can begin to shift from judgment and avoidance of the parts of ourselves that we may not approve of to curiosity; healing can begin.

I strive to always bring my own sense of authenticity to every session as I believe that therapy at its core is successful due to the relationship between clinician and client. As your therapist I will promise to be consistently present, challenge you gently but firmly when you need me to, and to empathetically and truly care about what you have to say. I have fourteen years of experience in the mental health field addressing issues ranging from depression and anxiety to substance use to feelings around gender and sexuality. I work with individuals and families but also have a strong passion in working with couples and relationships

I believe that all people are inherently deserving of intimacy, compassion, and love. Often, the biggest challenge is giving these things to ourselves. Only through coming to understand and love ourselves can we understand and love the world around us. Many of us have internalized the messaging that we don’t deserve to have our needs met, whether that messaging came from our family, our romantic partners, or culture at large. I believe in the inherent potential of all people to grow, change, and find their best selves. This applies equally to individuals and relationships: we can best love our partners when we best love ourselves.

My path to the study of nutrition and counseling began in 2008 when my doctor helped me realize the connection between my mood and my choices in food. She suggested a dietary shift that changed my life. After many years of study and clinical work I've learned many other ways to help the brain and body through nutrition and counseling. From 2012-2014 I worked as an intern therapist at Seattle Counseling Service where I taught an ongoing Food & Mood group. Since then I have worked in private practice helping people with food and mental health issues.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
