I have learned almost everything of importance about mental health from working with my patients. Though I consider that I had excellent training, as with many things in life, nothing prepared me for the intensity of my patients' life-stories. It was a trial by immersion, but as with such journeys, it was also one of discovery. Patients set before me stories of grief, longing, despair, addiction, obsession, but also of surprise, joy, and abundance. At times, they were overtaken by the force of events swirling around them, losing their bearings and sense of agency.

Many of us desire (and intend!) to make changes and yet find ourselves stuck in the same feedback loop, struggling to find freedom from social/cultural/personal scripts, increasingly disconnected from self and others. I work with couples and relationships of all structures from a culturally-informed, attachment-focused, and systemic perspective who are ready to make some radical changes in themselves and their dynamic. My work is primarily with folks in interracial family systems, blended families, and those with histories of interpersonal trauma. Together, we will work to restructure areas of your dynamic that need to be repaired.

Welcome to therapy! I’m here to ensure you’re getting a deeper understanding of yourself, behavioral patterns, as well as your relationships. I see individuals and couples and specialize in anxiety and panic disorder management, different forms of relational repair, parenting support/coaching, PTSD, and attachment disorders. I’m from Chicago, so I like to think I balance the ‘Midwestern nice’ with the ‘City of Broad Shoulders’ vibe well. I have a lot of experience working with LGBTQIA+ clients, but that is not to say that I don’t love working with people who do not identify within those identities as well!

Something broke. Maybe you're the one who caused it. Drowning in shame, wondering how you became so invisible that you ended up here. Will they ever forgive you? Can this even be fixed? Meanwhile, your partner is asking their own questions: Did you ever really choose me? Was any of it real? Am I enough? Betrayal trauma doesn't just wound one person, it fractures the whole relationship. I work with couples to face what happened without taking sides, understand what's underneath, and decide together what kind of relationship is worth building from here.

Therapy is a space for you to feel heard, validated and supported. It's an approach to feel less anxious, work toward goals, heal from trauma, and improve relationships. It can sometimes feel impossible to find ways to thrive in the capitalistic, oppressive system we're in, especially for marginalized folks. It is my goal for us to find ways for you to feel safe, fulfilled and content.

I believe that often, our deepest experiences of harm and trauma take place within relationships, and the ways that others relate to us has an enormous impact on the ways we learn to relate to ourselves. My work with clients often centers around exploring and integrating past experiences of harm, and through this, inviting clients to new ways of relating to themselves in the present. I am passionate about helping clients grow in self-awareness, courage, and self-compassion.

I work with parents and caregivers who are motivated to improve relationships and restore harmony to their lives. Do you wish your kid(s) would just cooperate? Are you tired of yelling, using bribery and/or punishment? Perhaps you've tried one or more of the popular parenting approaches, but without lasting success. Parenting children and adolescents is hard work, but it can also be fun and rewarding. I help parents who love their children, to like their children.

I know that reaching out for therapy can be so intimidating particularly with issues related to sexuality. You may be looking to step into a more authentic version of yourself or you may be dealing with relationship struggles. You may have felt stuck for some time or are just beginning to question what doesn't feel right. Together, we can embrace the challenges of life's struggles and work to find you more ease. I am an identity affirming therapist who especially loves working with people who are queer, BIPOC, neurodivergent, disabled, or somehow 'othered' by society.

Creative approaches for deep feelers. You may find yourself seeking an open-minded counselor who accepts you for who you are, who you used to be, and who you want to become. I am the artsy-witchy-auntie therapist ready to walk beside you into a new era. My counseling style seeks to address the needs of adults and teens who are deep feelers, dreamers, and caretakers. My specialties include men's issues, depression, substance use disorder(SUD), trauma, and anxiety.
I started my private practice with the goal of bringing greater mental health awareness, support, and healing to my community. For many years, mental health has carried stigma, preventing people from receiving the care and understanding they deserve. I have seen how trauma, life challenges, and emotional hardships can affect individuals and families, and I wanted to create a space where people feel supported, heard, and empowered. I believe that healing is possible, growth can happen after hardship, and people deserve to be reminded that they can come back from anything life brings their way.

Being human is messy and complicated. The way men struggle to define themselves when old scripts no longer fit. How new parents discover their relationship and identities have shifted. The spiritual hunger that shows up in unexpected places — career crises, a changing world, a relationship that suddenly feels foreign. I've been a social worker, teacher, and carpenter across three continents. I've learned that whether you're building a house or a life, things don't always go as planned. The next step is figuring out who you are and what you want to build. I can help you with that.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
