As a therapist I am particularly interested in transformative treatment that understands and treats the core issues of suffering and
pain
.
"The Glory of God is a human being fully alive". Saint Irenaeus As a clinician, I work with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including relationships, anxiety, depression, addiction, food/body/movement issues, anger, and grief. More often than not, all of these mental health struggles are actually indicators of a deeper issue. They are just symptoms that we will work diligently to understand and "grow up" as we see their purpose and function in your life and relationships. If you are continually fighting the same battle against a part of yourself, come and see me!

I treat a diverse set of challenges and disorders, including but not limited to life transitional and/or career stressors, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, chronic
illness
, trauma, and ADHD.
I work with people who want to identify their strengths and make valuable changes in their lives. We are often much more resourceful, adaptable, and stronger than we believe! Much of my work is focused on self-compassion and self-esteem, emotional awareness, relationships, and empowerment. In order to make change, being kind to ourselves is often the first, and sometimes hardest, step! I also aim to help you not only in the relationship with yourself, but also with improving your relationships with others. My goal is to be a guide along the way as you process and tackle your hardest moments and come out with newfound strength.

Life is a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant experiences. While most of us would prefer to be happy and
pain
-free all the time, unpleasant emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, stress, anger, and guilt are all part of the human experience. Sometimes we get “hooked” on these thoughts or emotions and they prevent us from living our lives to the fullest. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can change our relationship with unpleasant thoughts, physical sensations, or emotions so they have less of an impact on our daily lives and do not prevent us from doing the things that matter most.

I enjoy working collaboratively with my clients, helping each to develop the specific and unique tools necessary to cultivate a more satisfying and fulfilling life. My approach is to first actively listen, gaining a thorough understanding of the history of the situation and symptoms, the presenting challenges, and any other influences such as family history, cultural or racial factors, chronic
illness
, and economic stressors. We will then work together to identify treatment goals and ways to reach them. I work with a broad spectrum of clients ranging in age from 16 and above, offering individual, couples, and family therapy.

Congrats on looking for a therapist! I offer attentive care in my spaces, leaning into the places where uncertainty and
pain
have felt heavy. I believe our minds and bodies carry our life experiences, both good and bad, and flourishing happens when we are seen, understood, and respected. I love working with individuals who are in transitional spaces, processing trauma, or are examining their values around relationships, culture, or sexuality. It would be an honor to walk with you as you discover what it looks like to truly embrace your own mind, heart, and body.

Therapy is a commitment to journey into the self that is more circular than linear. The first rung is awareness. Before we examine ourselves and our lives we must become aware of our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Otherwise, we live at a reactive and habitual level. The second rung is understanding these patterns woven through our lives; because it is always larger than the given moment. I call it our mental landscape. And, finally acceptance with clarity and truth. When we accept ourselves and our history with compassion we conscientiously make the changes in our lives that resonate at a deep and true-self level.

I have a collaborative approach to counseling where I work with clients to help them identify areas for change and to make changes by setting specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-sensitive goals. To do this, I incorporate evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness meditation, and other modalities. Generally, this involves changing or adjusting our relationship to our thoughts and changing behaviors that negatively impact our functioning and get in the way of us living meaningful lives based on our values and what is important to us.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
