We can help you build healthier relationships with yourself, your partner , children, co-workers and your boss.
You don’t have to be sick to be Building Healthier Relationships (BHR). BHR is about developing a better toolbox to enhance relationships with yourself and others, and to provide a safe, nurturing environment for learning and healing. Life isn’t just a bowl of cherries—it also includes the PITs. In life, the PITs (Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment) provide the seeds for future cherries. While we are all victims at times, healing starts with moving from a victim mentality of blaming others to the survivor mentality of taking responsibility—not for what happened in the past, but for how to go forward.

Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples provides clients with better understanding of their relationship and provides a deeper attachment where couples can be more engaged, accessible, and responsive to each other.
I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families. Having had experience working with trauma, I often work with those that find past issues are affecting them and their relationships in the present. I also have experience working with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, life transition issues, chronic pain and health issues, as well as many other concerns. One of my main goals in our initial sessions is to grasp an understanding of your individual identity from an empathic and non-judgmental perspective; it is important in all of our sessions that you feel heard and that your opinion is valued.

Many couples want to communicate better, and at the core, partners want to feel emotionally connected to each other. Oftentimes, the negative interaction cycles of blame-withdraw, attack-defend, demand-withdraw are actually the indicators for the loss of emotional disconnection between partners. By identifying the cycle, couples can become more open to and engaged with each other, can create new emotionally attuned connections, and can revitalize their relationship . Attention to the couples sexual relationship is interwoven throughout the couples therapy. Visit my website to connect with me more.

As a modality, I adhere to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques but believe that the true measure of effective therapy is the relationship between the client and clinician.

I specialize in working with adults , with a focus on depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, grief, relationship conflict and emotion regulation.
You must master a new way to think before you can master a new way to be; Maryanne Williamson. To create lasting change at the level of thought requires an acknowledgment and understanding of how the nervous system states influence our brain states and drive our responses to life and to ourselves. I work to help my clients find emotional and spiritual wellness through learning how to manage and navigate the emotional challenges in life. I do this through understanding and working with the nervous system and the body as well as building awareness and challenging thoughts and deeper core beliefs.

Psychotherapy may be helpful if you feel depressed, anxious, restless or fearful, you struggle to feel happy, your relationship with your spouse /significant other feels hopeless, you are sad because of a loss, and/or you have a secret, a thought, or a behavior that is causing you or a loved one grief or distraction.
A central focus of my theory and practice is to help my patients recover a sense of freedom and choice in relationship to others and to the self. Being able to live fully, in spite of your circumstances, is possible. The work we do together will be to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to discover what kind of life you wish to have, and what has prevented you from living fully, whether it be unrecovered/unresolved loss, trauma, or wounds that won't heal.

I truly believe that our internalized model of safety begins when we're just a child. Dr. Sue Johnson shares, "All of us, from cradle to grave, are happiest when life is organized as a series of excursions, long or short, from the secure base provided by our attachment figure(s)." I work with individuals and couples who have struggled to feel safe and secure in their most valuable relationships. For many of them, understanding how to connect to themselves personally, or with a loved one, is difficult terrain to navigate. I work with issues around experiences with anxiety, depression, trauma, and/or neglect.

I offer a client-centered approach using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and mindfulness tools to decrease and manage symptoms in a safe therapeutic relationship .
Hi, my name is Mary Jane Poulson; I go by "Jane". I have worked in the helping profession for over 30 years with a primary focus on the treatment of depression, anxiety and trauma. I have worked with issues ranging from chronic mental disorders to major life stressors. I understand how difficult it can be to find someone to feel comfortable enough to share your inner most thoughts and feelings, and how emotional distress and unhelpful thinking can contribute to dysfunctional behaviors and conflicted relationships, perpetuating your pain. When friends or family aren't enough to help, it's time to find a professional you can trust.

“If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can’t survive.” - Brene Brow. Sex therapy is a type of talk therapy aiming to alleviate physical and emotional roadblocks to sexual satisfaction. Sex and sexuality are often associated with shame. If you find yourself navigating these feelings, you’re not alone. Sexual dysfunction is a common problem among all genders and sexualities. I provide therapy for individuals and couples /relationships.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
