Everyone faces challenges in their lives that may cause stress, concerns, or behaviors that lead to a desire for change. In these times of transition it can be helpful to have a guide who is not a family member or friend; someone who can help by offering new ideas & help to create concrete goals to move toward positive change. My intent is to facilitate that process. I believe in addressing the “whole person”: mentally, physically, emotionally & spiritually, in ways that fit you & your needs because it's You, by Us.

As a Mental Health Counselor I work in the following areas: Adult Mental Health Counseling Adolescent and Youth Counseling Geriatric Counseling Family and Couples Counseling Areas of therapeutic focus: Anxiety Depression Post Traumatic Stress Sexual Identity Gender Addiction Self-Image Relationships Among others.
My approach to Mental Health Counseling is to view the client as expert in their own life. I do not play the role of expert in my client's lives. I do, however act as a guide, advocate, educator, and support person. What I will do is attempt to see your issues from your perspective and your view of the world. I work within the framework of Person-Centered Therapy, which focuses on the client being the expert, Existential Therapy, which focuses on behavior and looks at how the client thinks, feels, and behaves and the impact they have on others.

Wouldn't you agree that good healthy relationships are one of the greatest joys in life? When our relationships with those who are most important to us are going well, life seems at its best. But these relationships can become broken and cause us pain. Relationships take time, effort, careful handling and real love. The good news is relationships can heal, and there's help to get you there. As a marriage and family therapist , I most enjoy helping couples and families navigate life's challenges through learning new skills to get to the relationships they desire.

I have 15 years of experience working as a marriage and family therapist .
Counseling is a journey and our first step is to define where you want to go. I see myself walking besides you in this journey and guiding you towards your chosen destination. Counseling consists of defining problems, understanding relevant history, and designing interventions to alter behaviors, feelings, attitudes, and thought patterns. My intention is to listen, validate, and empower your abilities. I hold compassion to those that want to process their thoughts and feelings.

Michael has unique experience working with clients on a variety of difficult issues: sexual abuse, traumatic experiences, and complex family dynamics.
With over sixteen years of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, Michael has successfully helped many clients with complex issues that negatively impact their lives and their families in significant ways. He believes in treating clients holistically (mind, body, and spirit) and that the work clients do outside of therapy is as important as the work they do in session. The priorities are helping clients develop skills and providing resources that will support them to make lasting change.

You may be feeling that the strands of your life are unraveling and you want to make sense of it all. My private practice, Tapestry Therapy, is founded upon the belief that your life is like a tapestry, consisting of strands of stories that have been woven together to make one larger story. Our story is part of the larger tapestry of our family , race, culture, country and world. Through the work of therapy, we come to understand our stories and be empowered to decide how we will write future chapters. I utilize process therapy and Lifespan Integration, which is a somatic therapy, to help my clients reach their goals.

My client profile consists of 1/3 children/adolescents, 1/3 trauma focused therapy due to sexual assault and/or sexual addiction impact, and 1/3 females over 40 who would like to explore making changes in life. I enjoy the diversity of my practice as all the above mentioned areas enable me to work with both childhood disorders and relational challenges into adulthood. My focus on sexual addiction/trauma and family of origin issues is to provide supportive and therapeutic space for partners and children/teens who have been impacted by someone who has either a confirmed or suspected sexual addiction.

Do you find yourself gripped by anxiety and worry, no matter what you do? You’ve accomplished a lot in life, but don’t feel the sense of fulfillment you expected. A big life change—maybe a breakup, new job, new relationship, loss of a loved one, or change in family relationships—has highlighted the fact that you’re still not as happy or confident as you want to be. Something is telling you that you need to make a shift (even if you’re not quite sure what it is). You want to gain deeper insight into yourself & your past experiences, and you’re ready to change your “default setting” and start creating new patterns in your life.

I work with couples and families who are struggling with communication and relationship boundaries, and who are looking to build a more honest and emotionally intimate connection. I am trauma informed and have a keen interest in working with people with high intelligence, people affected by substance abuse, dysfunctional family dynamics, spiritual uncertainty, intimacy issues, and childhood trauma. Let's explore what family means to you. I'd like to help you understand how and why you might struggle, while working towards a healthy sense of self. I strongly believe people can change in meaningful ways with safe guidance and support.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
