I have worked the past 17 years in various mental health settings. Working with the chronic mentally ill, addicts, and suicidal clients, I have learned the importance of listening with compassion, and communicating effectively to reassure the individual is being heard. I’ve enjoyed working in community based mental health, which helped me develop the therapeutic skills necessary for the treatment of clients in crisis. It also allowed me to connect and interact with a large diverse population.

I see tweens, teens, college students, adults, and parents: One of the hardest things as a parent is watching your child/teen suffer, whether it be from anxiety, OCD, depression, intense emotion, or social challenges. You want to support your child but feel at a loss. You may feel like the tools you've used for parenting and connecting with your child no longer work. Navigating the demands on your time and the emotions of your child feels impossible. You're suffering, too.

Welcome! I am glad you found my page and hope we can connect. I am both a licensed mental health therapist and an art therapist. I have always had a passion for utilizing a variety of arts in work with my clients, and I enjoy working with many different types of clients and diagnoses. Art is a tool I use within therapy to help the client express and process complex emotions and situations. In addition to art, I use different tools and methods depending on the need of the client such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, etc.

Accepting New Clients! Where have you come from, where are you now and where is it that you wish to go? I believe that each of our lives is an intricate interplay of many stories. We all have a unique and beautiful story to live and share, yet our story is not simply our own. We each exist and are formed by the interplay of our own stories, the stories of those who have helped us and harmed us, our stories of trauma, cultural stories, familial stories, and so on. Let's work together to discover the character you are in your life's story, what has shaped that character and empower the character you wish to be.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
