In 2011, I started Stewart Counseling Services, a private practice that enables me to invest in the lives of distressed individuals, couples , and families.
Angry? Scared? Worried? Confused and or ashamed? I work with people who have lost HOPE and people in unusually difficult circumstances. Hope empowers people to CHANGE. I also understand that change involves risk, so I respect that some changes are not easy. By exploring and sometimes adjusting the underlying beliefs, values, and emotions that drive your reactions and behaviors, I think you'll be able to achieve your best changes. You can find hope. You can LIVE again.

I am a collaborative partner , drawing from your strengths to promote change.
Our innate human desire and need for love and connection is undeniable. In my work with families, individuals and partners, I encourage my clients to uncover and share feelings that often lie underneath dysfunctional patterns and interactions. This systemic perspective also values reflection on the impact from our families of origin. I also aim to nurture a strong sense of identity and self worth, believing this is imperative in finding balance in our unpredictable, confusing world.

My clients often seek strategies for navigating healthy relationship building, explore intergenerational patterns and how they impact you in the here and now, and seek relief from phase of life changes.
My approach is based in relational connection and authenticity. I believe that each client is unique, so I am creative and individualized in my work to prioritize your safety, insight, and overall growth. I firmly believe that pursuing therapy does not mean something is “broken”; instead, therapy is an opportunity to seek clarity, support, and a space to put the things that you no longer wish to hold on your own. If you are seeking empowerment, investing in your ability to self-advocate, and motivated to explore the origin of unhealthy patterns and experiences, I may be a good fit for you.

I am experienced working with children, adults, couples , and families. Many times, people who call me are in distress, having tried what feels like everything, and they often feel frustrated and overwhelmed by their situation. My goal is to help individuals identify patterns of dysfunction that create problems for them. I work within the framework of an individual’s gifts and challenges to develop a strong relationship that allows for open communication and honesty. My strengths-based approach allows individuals to feel they have a voice and builds upon the good that is already taking place within their life and relationships.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
